The BFI Southbank Centre in London has put up a page previewing a screening of the action/SF cinema film 009 RE:CYBORG on April 4, to be presented by the director Kenji Kamiyama. Kamiyama is also the director of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East and Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit, all animated by Production I.G In February, Anime Limited annouced that 009 RE: CYBORG would receive a UK release in cinemas 'around April.'
The BFI screening will be at 8.20 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A with both Kamiyama and the film's producer Tomohiko Ishii. Tickets will go on sale on March 12 at 11.30 a.m. (Details of the film below the trailer.)
The film is made in CGI animation and shown in 3D, and is based on Shōtarō Ishinomori's classic science-fiction manga, Cyborg 009. Kamiyama's YouTube channel is streaming the trailer (above). The story begins when skyscrapers in London, Moscow, Berlin, and New York are destroyed by simultaneous bombings, causing widespread panic throughout the world. A group of nine cyborg fighters is reunited, but their former leader is living alone in Tokyo with his memories wiped.
The new podcast of the website UK Anime News includes an interview with Andrew Partridge of Anime Limited in which he talks about the release. He said that his 'goal' was to get the film on about 15 UK screens, over a period of two weeks.
