Manga creator Yoshiji Yamaguchi (Examurai Sengoku) is launching a Fist of the North Star spinoff manga series titled Kinyoku no Garuda - Nanto Goshasei Zenshi (The Gold Wings of Garuda ~The Prehistory of the Nanto Goshasei~) in the April issue of Tokuma Shoten's Comic Zenon magazine on February 25. Yamaguchi is launching the series as a part of the 30th anniversary of the original manga this year.
The manga will center on the new character Garuda, whose name comes from the mythical bird creature from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Garuda practices the "Nanto Shintori Ken" style of martial arts. In the manga Garuda will fight the five members of the Nanto Goshasei style, impress Rihaku, and provide a chance for Kenshirō and Yuria to unite.
Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's original post-apocalyptic fighting manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1983-1988.
Also as a part of the 30th anniversary celebrations, a new television anime adaptation of Kaijo's DD Fist of the North Star manga has been green-lit. Fruits Basket's Akitarō Daichi is directing that upcoming anime.
