1st Madoka Magica Film Opens at #7 With Over US$1 Million

Kadokawa Shoten's MovieWalker website reported that Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings opened on 43 screens at #7 at the Japanese box office this past weekend. It opened below The Lorax, which was seen 111,241 times and earned 149,122,950 yen (about US$1,905,730) on 528 screens at #6. (Monday was a Japanese holiday, and The Lorax was seen 195,644 times and earned 257,923,000 yen/US$3,296,150 across the extended three-day weekend.)
Another animated film, The Mystical Laws, opened at #4 with 159,258,000 yen (US$2,035,250) over Saturday and Sunday. It was seen 124,423 times on 208 screens. Over the three-day holiday weekend, it earned 226,176,900 yen (US$2,888,230) from 176,916 tickets.
All three animated films did open above the live-action film Atarashii Kutsu o Kawanakucha, which was seen 74,152 times on 203 screens during the three days. It picked up 98,830,000 yen (US$1,263,000) over the extended weekend.

Update: Takeshi Kitano's Outrage Beyond was seen 206,614 times on 225 screens for box office total of 279,247,500 yen (US$3,568,670) over the regular weekend. Over the three-day holiday weekend, it was seen 294,485 times to earn 395,287,800 yen (US$5,051,620).
