Shizukanaru Don Manga Gets 2nd Live-Action Film
posted on by Egan Loo
A new live-action film based on Tatsuo Nitta's Shizukanaru Don - Yakuza Side Story crime manga will open in Japan on September 5. In Shizukanaru Don: Shinshō (The Quiet Don: A New Chapter), Shizuya Kondō is the only son of a yakuza boss who walks away from the family business to become an underwear designer. When his father is assassinated, Kondō agrees to take over the yakuza organization on one condition: he keeps his day job. That means he must conceal his criminal activities from his co-workers, including a fellow designer who is also his love interest. Yoshihiko Hakamada, the actor who voiced the Baron character in Studio Ghibli's The Cat Returns film, is playing the main lead in this new film which Hideo Jōjō is directing.
The original manga has been running in Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha's Manga Sunday magazine since 1989, and 91 compiled book volumes have been published. The manga reached its 1,000th-installment milestone in February. Teruyuki Kagawa (Tales from Earthsea, Rampo) and Kōtarō Takeshita played the "don" in a series of original video projects from 1991 to 2001 and in a 2000 film. Director Hajime Kamegaki and Tokyo Movie Shinsha also created a 1991 anime video. Hideyuki Nakayama (Soreike! Anpanman: Ningyo Hime no Namida) played the main lead in the 1994-1995 television series adaptation.
