Tamagotchi TV Anime to Premiere in October (Update 2)

Latest anime based on Bandai's Tamagotchi virtual pets

A retailers' solicitation sheet has revealed that a television anime based on Bandai's Tamagotchi! virtual pets will premiere in Japan in October.

Bandai has been streaming the 2007-2008's Saikō! Tamagotchi television series on the YouTube video-sharing site for free in seven languages since last December. Before that, there was a 1997-1998 Anime TV de Hakken! Tamagotchi television series and a 1997 Tamagotchi Honto no Hanashi theatrical short. The first full-length Tamagotchi! feature, Eiga de Tōjō! Tamagotchi Doki Doki! Uchū no Maigotchi!?, opened in December of 2007, and Bandai Entertainment announced in 2008 that it had licensed that film for North America. The second film, Eiga! Tamagotchi Uchū Ichi Happy na Monogatari!?, opened in Japan last December.

Update: More background information added.

Update 2: According to the sheet, the new television anime series will simply be called Tamagotchi!. It will premiere at the beginning of October, but the timeslot has not been determined. Each episode will have two 15-minute, self-contained stories. The stories will follow the daily lives of the Tamagotchi and feature new characters and settings. Various new toys aimed at girls are slated to also appear in October, followed by a new software for the Nintendo DS game console in November. That same month, the Japanese McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain will offer Tamagotchi! Happy Sets, which are the equivalent of Happy Meals in North America.
