Manga short story offers pointed criticism of Japan's World War II history
Matthew Penney, an Assistant Professor at Concordia University, has translated and posted "War and Japan" ("Sensō to Nippon"), a short story about Japan's wartime past by GeGeGe no Kitarō creator Shigeru Mizuki. Mizuki brings the autobiographical perspective of a World War II veteran who lost his left arm during the war. At the same time, he is one of the more well-known voices in Japan that has criticized the country's conduct before and during the war. The story was originally published in Shōgaku Rokunensei (Elementary Sixth Grader), Shogakukan's magazine aimed at children. Other manga and anime creators have dealt with Japan's role in World War II from a variety of perspectives.
