M-02 prototype on display after successful manned test flights
The OpenSky Aircraft Project displayed its flying M-02 prototype model of the heroine's personal jet glider in Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind at the Nippon2007, Asia's first WorldCon science-fiction convention.
Artist Kazuhiko Hachiya and a team of engineers have built two prototypes of the Möwe (Mehve in English) jet-assisted glider and successfully held a series of piloted, unpowered test flights with the displayed M-02 prototype. The project is vying for a Seiun Award (the Japanese equivalent of the Hugo Award) in the independent category.
Unlike the Möwe in Nausicaä, the pilot of the OpenSky glider does not stand on the Möwe, but rather lies on it with his or her legs extended behind the craft.
