Shonen Jump Explodes Onto American Fan Scene

300,000 copies in distribution as Shonen Jump #1 goes into its third printing. Retailers have doubled their initial orders with reorders. ICv2 speculates that Shonen Jump may be the biggest American comic of the year.
Says Dallas Middaugh, Viz Director of Manga Sales and Marketing: "The magazine has been 'flying off the shelves.'" Viz can look forward to over a million dollars in sales from this first issue, which has shattered their sales expectations. In an earlier statement, Viz had predicted sales of 100,000 copies within six months.
The addition of a Yu-Gi-Oh! card free with the magazine has been the cause of at least some of the book's success. When orders were solicited, retailers did not know of the promotion.
