Witch Watch is great and I'm glad to see it finally animated. It's like if Roman from Sket Dance got her own anime and her gimmick was magic instead of shoujo manga. Ojamajo Doremi is great but unfortunately I think the 4Kids dub killed any chance of it catching on here. On the other hand Mahou Tsukai Precure is probably one of my least favorite Precures. Majo no Tabitabi was one of my favorites in 2020.
I was aware of western franchises like Bewitched being super huge in Japan and influencing a lot of Japanese media throughout history. I think it's mostly Harry Potter influencing things since the 90s these days with even creators from series like Mashle and Reign of the Seven Spellblades being tapped to promote the Hogwarts Legacy game in Japan when it came out. That's more about magic schools in general than specifically witches though. I'm curious how many younger Japanese creators are aware of Bewitched and have watched it. |

Not a single mention of Umineko. I know the anime adaptation is just a full on meme at this point, but still, absolutely criminal

I remember a while ago, an opinion that was going around was that Cardcaptor Sakura was a witch more than she was a magical girl. Still feels a bit controversial to say even though I don't know witch way I fall.

I loved Witch Craft Works and Maria the Virgin Witch, Flying Witch was a good time as well, and someday I need to finish the back half of Little Witch Academia.
As it lacks one of its own, I'm gonna throw my floppy witch hat into the ring for Belladonna of Sadness. The hat game in Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches' OP was enough to get me aboard for its full run, despite their lack in the show itself. :continues waiting for Witch Hat Atelier's adaptation: |

No mention of Sugar Sugar Rune? I actually started watching it when it received a Neutral Spanish dub last year, I have almost 20 episodes left. It's kind of weird since I think it's often classified as a Magical Girl show, but like it's mention, the line between witch and Magical Girl is not very clear

I thought Maebashi Witches had some really solid writing in its second and third episodes, tackling a sensitive but important topic (fatphobia) with quite a bit more grace and thoughtfulness than just about any other anime I can think of.
The series is written by Erika Yoshida, who also wrote Artiswitch, another series about witches granting wishes. It addressed many contemporary and heavy subjects with quite a bit of flair. Very aesthetic too, lots of fashion and music. It's super short and free on Youtube too! |
