CNN is reporting that Saudi Arabia's highest religious authority, the Higher Committee for Scientific Research and Islamic Law, has issued a legally binding edict which bans Pokémon games and cards. The CNN article however makes no mention of whether or not the Pokémon Anime and Manga are included in the ban.

According to the edict, which states " [Pokémon] has possessed the minds of a large chunk of our students, captivated their hearts and become their preoccupation, [they] spend all their money to buy the cards and compete with each other to win more," Pokémon promotes gambling amongst children. Gambling is banned under islamic law and is illegal in Saudi Arabia.

The edict also claims that the cards promote Zionism (Israeli Nationalism) and feature religious symbols such as the Star of David. A Nintendo oficial however has contradicted these claims and has stated that no religious symbols are depicted in the Pokémon games.
