Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider Creator Ishinomori's Early Shōjo Manga Gets Limited Reprint
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Late manga creator Shōtarō Ishinomori is probably best known among readers for creating Cyborg 009 in 1964, a story about nine cyborgs that turn against their creator, Black Ghost, a war profiteer. The manga continues to inspire new anime adaptations, the latest being the Cyborg 009 Call of Justice movie series. However, prior to his big break, Ishinomori published a manga in Shogakukan's Shōjo Club magazine from 1957 to 1958.
She Wore a Blue Ribbon (Mizuiro no Ribon) follows Rumiko who grew up in poverty. The serialization was collected into a single book volume in 1959 by Wakaba Books. It's this version of the manga that's finally getting a reprint, albeit in a very limited edition.
Only 150 copies of She Wore a Blue Ribbon will be released in a special box set to celebrate what would have been Ishinomori's 80th birthday. Ishinomori biographer Junichi Fukuda supervised the release, making sure it faithfully recreates the cover artwork and binding of the original. The limited edition release also adds the story Chiri nuru o… Shiroi Bara no Monogatari by Asuka Izumi. Ishonomori edited the story originally and his notes are included.
The box set will retail for 54,000 yen (US$495) and includes a 192 page booklet. All the items included in the set are marked with a serial number.
