posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Fans wondering about Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi's gaming skills can go online on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. JST (5:00 a.m. EST) to watch him play Final Fantasy VI on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Classic Edition. Sakaguchi is partnering with Famitsu for the livestream, and it will be available to view on both YouTube and Niconico Live.
Famitsu and Sakaguchi are planning the livestream in four parts, with each part streaming on the first day of the month. The goal is for Sakaguchi to finish the game within the four livestreams. Square Enix pixel artist Kazuko Shibuya, who worked on the original game with Sakaguchi, will appear as a guest for the first installment of the livestream.
Sakaguchi was an employee at Square since its inception as an independent company in 1986. He was employed as director of planning and development and created the first Final Fantasy role-playing game. Sakaguchi left Square and founded game developer Mistwalker in 2004. He has since developed games such as Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Last Story, and Terra Battle. Sakaguchi announced in June 2016 that he is planning a new development company that will be located in Tokyo. Sakaguchi appeared at Anime Expo in Los Angeles last July.
Final Fantasy VI shipped for the Super Famicom (SNES) in Japan and debuted as Final Fantasy III in North America in 1994.
The SNES Classic Edition mini console shipped with Final Fantasy VI as one of its 21 pre-installed titles in North America on September 29. The system shipped in Japan on October 5. Nintendo revealed on February 1 that the system has sold 4 million units worldwide.
