posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
A sub-genre of manga, referred to as "gourmet manga" that focuses on cooking and eating delicious food, maintains a steady influx of new varieties of reading material. Whether the reader wants to devour traditional Japanese fair or fast food, there's a manga for that.
Ryōko Naga's Europe Tabi Gohan (Everyday European Meals) doubles as a food diary and travel book showcasing the cuisine of Europe. The manga stars a married couple who casually travel about and eat local dishes. The manga's chapters are grouped by region like Paris, Amsterdam, Scandinavia, London, and Berlin. The couple tries out German bratwurst, British raclette melted over boiled potatoes, an authentic French baguette, and more.
The book also doubles as a how-to guide for travelers and includes common phrases in multiple languages and pointers for shopping abroad.
Naga was born in Hokkaido but currently lives abroad in Berlin. Europe Tabi Gohan is her debut work.
The late Jiro Taniguchi drew a travel manga for Louis Vuitton of the Italian city of Venice and is the creator of the Kodoku no Gourmet manga series. Publishers Fanfare and Ponent Mon are releasing that manga in English next month.
