Takayuki Yamada Casts Dragon Quest Spells at Work in New Commercial
posted on by Eric Stimson
It can be easy to forget that even widely known fan jargon still sounds like complete gobbledygook to ordinary people. Still, it's unlikely that most of us use it as much as Takayuki Yamada (Terraformars, Bakuman.) does in his commercial for Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End.
The commercial shows Yamada at a board meeting delivering a presentation on the strategy for next quarter. They cannot expect the Japanese economy to Heal, he says, so the future is Hocus Pocus (unclear). But the Asian market is Zooming. He wants to Dazzle and Fuddle (confuse) the company's competitors. He casts Cock-a-doodle-doo on a snoring coworker and warns the meeting that they don't have time to Snooze. He declares that he has the will to Kamikazee (sacrifice his own life) in order to give the company Oomph (double its attack power). A young coworker shouts that he's Frizzing (on fire — often used to describe burning passion). Together, Yamada swears, they will Puff (turn into dragons), Kacrack (attack with ice), Kazap (attack with lightning), Magic Burst, Kasizzle (attack with a wave of fire), Tick-tock (change day into night), Morph and BAZOOM! BAZOOM! (blow enemies away). Later, at home, he casts Kafrizzle, going up in (metaphoric) flames.
Another commercial shows how Yamada's character got here. His boss promotes him to section chief, or as Yamada sees it, he "levels up." He celebrates his increase in salary, underlings, responsibility, and freedom. Then he uses the freedom to go home early, presumably to play Dragon Quest Heroes II.
Finally, Yamada sat down for a video interview on his opinions of Dragon Quest. He says Gadabout would be his ideal class, since he could goof off in battles while gaining experience — then changes his choice to Sage. He chooses Robust Lingerie as his preferred armor, because "it's no ordinary lingerie," then changes his mind again to Magic Armor. He'd like Funghoul as his friend because of its ability to put him to sleep when he's nervous. He reflects on how cool it is to voice a character in Dragon Quest Heroes II (Cesare), but admits he prefers playing with female characters.
Yamada earlier demonstrated his enthusiasm for pop culture (and capability for shouting) in commercials for Batman: Arkham Knight and the PlayStation 4. Dragon Quest is also cross-promoting the Toyota Prius c. Dragon Quest Heroes II will be released in Japan on May 27.
