Detective Conan Manga Takes 4-Week Hiatus
posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
This year's sixth issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine announced on Wednesday that Gōshō Aoyama's Detective Conan manga will take a four-week hiatus, starting with the magazine's next issue and continuing through the 10th issue, so that Aoyama can conduct research. The manga will resume in the magazine's 11th issue.
The manga recently returned from a nine-week hiatus that began on September 26 and ended on November 28. Aoyama similarly conducted research during that hiatus.
Weekly Shonen Sunday previously noted that Meitantei Conan: Zero no Tea Time (Detective Conan: Zero's Tea Time), the spinoff manga series by Takahiro Arai centering on the character Tōru Amuro, will have new chapters when the main Detective Conan manga is on hiatus, and will not publish chapters of the manga otherwise.
Arai (Tenshō no Quadrable, Cirque du Freak) launched the Meitantei Conan: Zero no Tea Time manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday last May. Aoyama has "complete supervision" over the work.
The main manga series centers on Conan Edogawa, the alias of detective Shinichi Kudo, whose body shrunk after being poisoned at the beginning of the story. Together with detective Kogoro Mori and his daughter Ran, Conan helps the police solve difficult mysteries.
Detective Conan has been running since 1994, and last August it became the first Weekly Shonen Sunday series to publish its 1,000th chapter. The manga's 95th compiled book volume shipped last October. The manga has spawned an ongoing television anime series and a yearly anime film series. The 22st film in the series, Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Meitantei Conan: Zero no Shikkōnin), opened on April 13 and became the highest-earning film in the franchise's history. Aoyama's various manga series have a combined 200 million copies in print worldwide.
