Scott Pilgrim (Canadian manga)

The original concept for this comic was based on two premises. The first was the idea of "What if, after spending your whole life of playing fighting games, someone confronted you and you actually had the ability to fight like a character from Street Fighter?" The second concept came about when Bryan Lee O'Malley was dating his future wife, Hope Larson. When he learned that she had previously dated three different guys named Matthew, O'Malley came up with the idea of a League of Matthews. This idea developed into the League of Evil Exes. Matthew Patel is the only Evil Ex to retain the name of Matthew.

Scott Pilgrim’s parents were unnamed throughout the course of the comic, but Bryan Lee O'Malley has hinted that the dad is an older version of the character Vincent from another of his comic books, "Monica Beetle", which was set in the year 1974.
