The final episode of the live action GTO had the highest ratings of any finale ever aired in Japan. The U.S. equivalent of this feat was performed by the series finale of M*A*S*H.
In the first episode, there are 2 references to a famous J-Drama called "Kinpachi-sensei." It started in 1979 and has spinned off 5 sequels. The first reference is when Onizuka goes to the video store and asks if they have all of "Kinpachi-sensei," and after his photo scam with Nanako, one of the photographer boys says he owns all of Kinpachi-sensei. The Kinpachi-sensei character has always been played by Takeda Tatsuya. A year before Sorimachi Takeshi made it big with GTO, him and Takeda were both stars in anotehr J-dorama, Virgin Road
It's worth to mention that Takashi Sorimachi (Onizuka) and Nanako Matsushima (Fuyutsuki) got married in February 2001.
Akira Nakao (Uchiyamada) also played the principal of the school where Onizuka and Ryuji attended in the Shonan Junai Gumi Live Action (Shonan Junai Gumi is the prequel to GTO).
