Eden of the East is the first original anime to be aired in Fuji TV Noitamina block. All previous shows aired in the block were anime based on previously published manga.
The OP contains a line from William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" that reads "The abuse of greatness is when it disjoins remorese [sic] from power." The line was originally spoken by Brutus.
The film screened in the cinema in ep. 3 (titled "The Cold Blue" in the anime) is clearly intended to reference "The Big Blue" ("Le Grand Bleu", dir. Luc Besson, 1988).
Juiz's name comes from the portuguese word which means Judge.
Selecao comes from the portuguese word selecção (minus the "c" in brazilian portuguese) which means selection.
About 5:20 into the third episode, Akira mentions a movie the mall reminded him of called "Dorm of the Dead." This is a reference to "Dawn of the Dead," in which a group of people who stay in a mall to avoid zombies.
In Episode 1 the taxi driver turns the radio to 95.5, this radio station (WPGC 95.5) is Washington D.C.'s #1 R&B and hip hop station.
In episode 1 the taxi driver is wearing an Authentic Washington Nationals baseball cap.
Every americans we see in episode 1 look like they do understand japanese language.
In episode 2, the Meg Ryan movie Akira mentions about the Brooklyn Bridge and time travel is Kate & Leopold.
In episode 3 when Morimi entered Takizawa's resident, you can see a big earth statue with a word The World is Yours behind the couch. It refers to a classic old movie titled Scarface (1983)
