Rurouni Kenshin, Episode 04: Bad!
1) Spray of blood from punk's mouth after Sanosuke's punch digitally emoved.
2) Yahiko's "Well I don't know but they look like a bunch of drunks to me" changed to "Well I don't know but they look like a bunch of bums to me."
3) Yahiko's "I doubt you even know what you're talking about you big drunk" changed to "I doubt you even know what you're talking about you annoying bum."
4) Drunk's "Who are you calling a drunk?" changed to "Who are you calling a bum?"
5) Yahiko's "Even a drunk crusader is still a drunk" changed to "Even an annoying crusader is still annoying."
6) Not an Edit... Tae getting backhanded left in. (Yahiko can't be hit but Tae can it seems.)
7) Sanosuke's "Or is it that the democracy you fools preach is the freedom to get drunk and give innocent folks a hard time with your big mouths" changed to "Or is it that the democracy you fools preach is the freedom to go wild and give innocent folks a hard time with your big mouths."
8) Sanosuke's "That really pisses me off" changed to "That really irritates me."
9) Subtitle "wicked" removed from Sanosuke's back. (Considering that all other Japanese signage has been subtitled I have to wonder what the purpose was behind this edit.)
Well it's obvious what drew the attention of the censors in this episode. While they avoided the topic of drunkeness at least they didn't insult our intelligence by trying to claim they were drinking tea.
Rurouni Kenshin, Episode 5: The Reversed-Blade Sword vs The Zanbatou
1) Scene of shadows of Sekihoutai troopers being gunned down cut.
2) Scene of Sekihoutai trooper collapsing while clutching a bleeding chest wound cut.
3) Further scenes of Sekihoutai troopers being massacred cut.
4) Scene of two Sekihoutai troopers following Sagara and Sanosuke being gunned down cut.
5) Scene of Sagara being gunned down cut.
6) Sanosuke's "I don't mind if you want to get drunk and pick a fight with me..." changed to "I don't mind if you want to get wild and pick a fight with me..."
Well it was evident the massacre of the Sekihoutai was in for some trimming despite its highly stylized presentation. But I am surprised that those forbidden words surrounding death are still in evidence.
