Nintendo Updates Patent for Emulating Games on Mobile Platforms
posted on by Egan Loo
On June 23, Nintendo submitted a "divisional application" update to its earlier 2003 patent filing for emulating a handheld game system on a "low-capability target platform." The patent lists Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance as examples of handheld game systems, and it lists "a seat-back display for airline or train use, a personal digital assistant, [and] a cell phone" as examples of target platforms.
The 2003 patent filing was made public in 2012, and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reported this year that his company was considering a "new business structure" that could incorporate smartphones. However, Nintendo emphasized it was looking at the smartphone market as a way to raise consumer awareness of the company's titles, not necessarily as another game platform. The in-flight entertainment systems of some airlines have been offering Nintendo games for years.
