Nintendo Confirms New 3DS Will Be Region-Locked
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Nintendo confirmed with gaming website Gamespot that the New Nintendo 3DS system will be region-locked. Games that are released in Japan will not be playable on North American New Nintendo 3DS and vice versa. The previous generation of 3DS and Nintendo's Wii U are also region-locked.
In regards to region-locking, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata previously said, "From some people's perspective, it might seem like a kind of restriction. However, we hope people can appreciate the fact that we're selling our products worldwide."
The company previously announced a browser content filter. Users must pay a one-time 30 yen (about US$0.29) fee with connected credit card information to remove the content restriction. The feature is intended as a parental control.
The new Nintendo 3DS models will be available in Japan on October 11. A European release is slated for sometime next year. A North American release has not been confirmed.
