You know, i hadn't really considered it before, but i suppose Tota just might be a bit overpowered at this point in the series. I guess the reasons this didn't really bother me were:

1. The ending of Negima! is still fresh on my mind; we know how strong Negi and Nagi were/are, so i just naturally expected Tota to be up there as well.

2. Much of the tension regarding his character is less "can he beat these minor villains" than "who/what is he really?" I don't think volume 3 gets into this much yet, but at the very least, possessing that rare, dark power he reveals raises some questions about his true nature.

3. Most of the other characters seem similarly overpowered. Again, don't think volume 3 is the best showcase for it, but there are legitimate threats who can overpower and/or outfight Tota.

4. Tota is just so gosh-darn likeable. It almost feels like i SHOULDN'T like him, since he's technically just a cliche protagonist character, but it almost feels unique in how classic he is.

I guess this is a case where a story element just doesn't bother me as much as it does other people. While this is never an adequate defense, i will say that some of the strongest bits of the series take place after volume 3.

I agree that the weakest element to this series is, unfortunately, its MC. Tota is likable enough but remains too shallow in his motivations and personality for me to really latch onto him.

The immortal-killer group was absolutely the best part of this first three volumes, and it's a concept I hope gets explored a lot more in the future.

I'm hoping, too, that Tota's game-breaking OP abilities will be revealed to have been built up on purpose, and there will be a satisfying reversal of "who's the strongest" following that.

Holder volume 3 was where I started collecting this series, and I don't regret that choice.

While I agree that Touta is pretty shallow as a main character right now, he does get a lot more development in his character and what he actually is, beginning in the arc after next, and culminating in a lot of stuff in the arc that just finished in the recent release. Also, next volume has a bunch of callbacks to Negima as well, so there's that too to appeal to readers of Akamatsu's previous series.

Tota is way too strong, and it makes these fights a whole lot less satisfying than they should be.

you cant be surprised by that fact considering that the storyline have him as Negi's grandson and is related to Konoka's family which i SERIOUSLY have my doubts about both of them.

Hopefully UQ Holder! will find tougher foes for its heroes in the coming chapters. But at the moment, it feels like we're actually following the seemingly unstoppable villains, not the scrappy, endearing heroes

you wont have to worry about that since the next villain in vol 4 and 5 are as tough as they come. and they have to be considering that its spoiler[ Fate himself] as the current main bad of the series which will please or have negima fans in a massive tizzy.

it also confirms as everyone expected that karin is indeed a bonifide lesbian taking over setsuna's spot as a hardcore swordswoman who only likes only girls. unfortunately it also confirms her uber obsession for Yukihime(Evangeline) spoiler[ when she actually asks Fate if those two were an item at one time]. Which in itself is pointless since negima fans know that she only had romantic feelings for Negi and Nagi.

And her dislike of Tota's relationship with yukihime definitely feels a little too reminiscence of another obsessive lesbian who people loathe to a tee (we're talking to you kuroko shirai). akamastu definitely needs to fix that about her personality. sure we dont want her to have feelings for tota too and really make this series into another harem ala negima, and some dont want to have her as another Setsuna clone, but the uber man (particularly tota) hating and her obsession for yukihime definitely needs to be patched up fast if she is to be really liked cause the series at least on the feminine side cant be completely about yukihime being the only one that is likable.

I wish I could say it gets better but... it kinda doesn't. It just stays on that line of mediocrity relying mostly on action set pieces and visuals. Things have happened in the plot but its getting harder and harder to hold on to actual interest as opposed to only knowing what's going on so I don't get confused.

As for this volume (I'm not sure if it covers the whole orphan village arc or not but I'll be talking about it as a whole) it played to the strength of the series as far as I'm concerned which is it's solid over the top action scenes. It's spectacle over substance, but at the time I read it I was so starved for a battle manga that didn't piss me off that this was a Godsend. Just too bad that's all their is too it, If One Punch Man weren't bi weekly, parody or no this'd be flat out obsolete to me and if Ohkubo's newer manga gets licensed, (which is just as mediocre in a way sadly, but is much more stylish with it's choreography.) then my only reason to keep reading it would be through force of habit.
