That's not true for all asian movies. For example "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was popular. "Hero" did pretty well too. As a general rule, it's not just Asian movies that are not popular. The same is true for most foreign films. You should also remember that Hollywood spends a lot more on advertising than most Asian distributors would afford to spend. |

American movies are also popular in Europe, Africa, and pretty much everywhere else. It is not just an Asian phenomena. |

The best part about the new movie is that it has the Japanese suit Godzilla fight the US cgi Godzilla. I wish they bring this movie to the US already.

I think it's also supposed to be the final Godzilla movie (at least for now) which is why it's called "Godzilla Final Wars". |

I think it's different this time. Godzilla has sucked big time at the box office in recent years. So now they want to go out with one big movie, then stop for at least 10 years so people will want more Godzilla.

You guys are pretty much all right. I actually got to see this film at the premiere in Hollywood two weekends ago and talked to a lot of people about how it was going up against the Incredibles at the box office. Somehow these Godzilla movies always seem to get released along side some big American film. Anyways, yes this is the 50th anniversary film, and yes it's supposed to be the last one they're ever going to do. But, in about 5 years when Toho realizes they need to make a quick buck, guess what, we're gonna get ourselves yet another addition to the Godzilla series. Which, being a Godzilla fan, i won't mind at all.

Yeah, that's basically what I said. Godzilla bombed pretty regularly through the 1970s (I can see why...c'mon, Megalon!?), resulting in Terror of Mechagodzilla being the original "last Godzilla film ever" in 1975. Then they made Godzilla 1985 (known as "Gojira" in Japan and actually coming out in 1984) to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary. Then things began to dwindle again through the nineties (I think the only really big winner prior to 1995 was the remake of Godzilla vs. Mothra), before they decided once again that "this is the last Godzilla film ever" with Godzilla vs. Destroyer in 1995 (why in the hell did Toho make them call it "Destoroyah" for the local release?). This also (I think) had to do with some contract issue with the American Godzilla (something about no competition from Japan while a trilogy is made). And after Develin & Emmerich screwed up royally with their "Godzilla" in 1998 (would've actually been a more convincing Beast From 20,000 Fathoms remake, sans the asexual reproduction garbage which just sucked no matter what), Toho was pressured into doing more real Godzilla movies. These were pretty hit or miss (I think they did better later into the run with GMK and the two Mechagodzilla movies, but I'm not sure), and once again the whole "last movie ever" line came up for Final Wars. I suspect the next Godzilla movie will come out around 2014. Of course, given how there's never been a gap in production to last longer than ten years (longest was nine, 1975 to 1984), that may be overestimating a bit.

Toho never said anything about the '95 Godzilla Movie being the last one ever. They said that they were just planning on taking a break. And that's what they said about this movie.

This surprised me. So far Howl's Moving Castle has earned less than Spirited Away at the same time (in Yen). Wonder if they're expecting some holiday surge in sales, or if they're abusing the lower US dollar to say that Howl will earn more US dollars than Spirited Away... Or are they referring to International Box Office sales... -t |
