The title is quite misleading, to be honest. I initially thought that that it's Tsugumi Ohba's or Takeshi Obata's opinion.

That is the exact same thing I came here to say.

I guess "an author criticizes L" wouldn't be as eye grabbing. Not that it isn't an opinion I haven't seen echoed in almost everything I read about this show.

I also thought it was Ohba or Obata's opinion. At any rate, I'm also somewhat disappointed with the live L. He comes off as much more of a posing, petulant show off than he was in the anime or manga. That said, he's not completely terrible, and I'm enjoying the show a lot. One of my most looked-forward-to simulcasts this season.

Maybe that's why L had all that shirtless fan service in episodes 1,2,4

Have to agree, the L actor is pretty bad. The Light guy is making a good effort, but L doesn't make an impression at all. I want to see a live-action L who actually looks and acts like a weird creepy shut-in, not an aspiring boy-band member wearing eyeliner.
Also those stupid juice pouch things have got to be some kind of product-placement and I'm sick of looking at them.
Although the worst acting award goes to Near, who also qualifies for "World's Worst Ventriloquist" Why they even had that character make an appearance this early on is puzzling as well. And I'm still not sure if he's supposed to be male of female in this version, because if it's the former, the actress isn't fooling anybody.

Personally I'm enjoying L in the series, to me he is more cocky and has more personality than L in the manga/anime/movies. The other L's are awesome but This one has more personality to me.

I also liked L in the anime/manga, although I haven't seen the movies [yet].
Light's actor is really trying, but I don't really like him as a character in general.

He's got the WRONG personality. L is supposed to be a pale, malnourished, disheveled, socially awkward, borderline creepy shut-in who would prefer to not interact with people at all. That's the point, he's NOT what you'd expect this genius detective to be like, and he provides a stark contrast to Light (who's prim, proper, well-groomed, handsome, well-dressed, and easily charms people).

Kenichi Matsuyama was the perfect live action L. Since they obviously could not match his perfection, they must have decided to just rewrite the character into a cocky pretty boy.
Not a fan of the new L, don't particularly hate him. I like the new Light, even if he's a totally different character to the anime/manga/movies. I feel that Raye Penber was particularly impressive in this version though.
Overall, it's an interesting alternate take that provides us with a story separate from either the manga/anime or the movies, which makes it fun for me so far.

Why the heck is the word protagonist in quotation marks? There's nothing questionable about Light's role as the main character. If whoever wrote this article thought a protagonist needs to be a good guy, they need to go back to 8th grade English class.
