It's definitely not Soul Eater, that's for sure. The ending was PATHETIC. Worst witch ever. Then again, the ending to the original Soul Eater was pathetic too.

On that note, I've been trying to sell the first 10 volumes of Soul Eater, but nobody wants to buy them. Everyone else I know who was buying the manga stopped as well after reading the ending.

I'm looking forward to seeing this since it seems like a fun show in a familiar setting. Everything that I've seen about the show made it pretty clear that this was more Soul Eater adjacent then a direct part of the show, even the title tells you as much, so no worries there.

The blooper reel might be fun since I don't think I've ever seen one from Funimation. It's good that they are at least attempting to add some different kinds of extras. I know they try when a show doesn't come with a lot of its own extras out of Japan, but there is obviously the cost factor to consider.

Worth seeing? Maybe if you are a huge HUGE Soul Eater fan, or like SOL moe girl series enough to watch literally anything.

Worth buying? Never.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood had a really good one.

I am probably in the minority, but I liked Soul Eater Not! more than the original. I am not a big moe fan, but the main trio in Not! is very charming. The original Soul Eater has a cool premise, but its lousy execution made it boring for me.

basically the show's producers (and perhaps the source manga creator as well?) made no effort whatsoever to make the series feel like it is actually set in the States. Why bother putting the story there, then?

That's something I always wondered as well. Based on just the architectural design of the city, it would have been better off to just have the city placed somewhere in Europe.

I agree with this sentiment. The factors of this show that are supposed to make it independent from Soul Eater (characters, story, etc.) aren't good enough for this show to sell on its own merit. I wouldn't really recommend this series to anyone outside of that demographic and even then I can't say this series is actually worth buying.

Every time I look at the character art for this series, I can't help but shake my head at taking the original series' particular edgy-shounen artstyle and turning everyone into gigantic moeblobs. (The shots of Maka I've seen are particularly egregious.) Thanks but no thanks.

It was cute Soul Eater Girls doing cute things for me and like most shows of that type I would often go from intrigued to bored to intrigued to bored ad nauseam. I should have just said no after the first 3 eps. I only see it for fans of such shows or for hardcore collectors of Soul Eater.

As do I. I have the DVDs but somehow I guess I somehow missed that it had a blooper reel.

I feel like such a Soul Eater tool because I bought the LE of this series even though my feelings towards NOT's anime is, at best, "meh." But my love for the franchise overpowered all the negatives *sigh* Gives me and my friends something to riff on after a bad day I guess.

Story wise I felt like NOT should have just focused on being a Slice-of-Life instead of trying to be an action series. It was at its best when it just dealt with the life of a DWMA student, especially since the Shaula plotline came off as just a side story (especially in the manga.) It's literally not Soul Eater, but it tried to be and that's what knocks it down a couple points.

Not to mention some inconsistencies. The whole spoiler[Flying Halberd] twist really ticked me off purely because it shouldn't be possible given what happens in the manga with Maka and Soul. Thankfully while both the manga and anime pretty much have the same ending, the manga didn't do something as stupid as that.

Personally, I think the review was being too generous when it gave the animation a B. Every anime has its moments of Off-model and Uncanny Valley, even SE, but NOT had those awkward elements in nearly every frame. Not many characters looked consistent and the fight scenes range from okay to rather abnormal looking. It's pretty lazy, especially since this is BONES. They did things like Space Dandy, FMA, and Blood Blockade Battlefront. They could do so much better, but clearly they didn't throw their budget (or effort) into this.

With that all said- I think the dub made the series easier to get through. Not only was it nice to hear the original SE cast again, but I found the girls more endearing because they talked and acted like girls their age rather than typical moe archetypes. Like they had a better range of emotions, if that makes sense. The only downside is that watching the dub meant noticing more of the inconsistencies in the animation than I originally did when watching the Sub.

I still wouldn't recommend NOT's anime to anyone though, unless they were fine, or at least tolerable, of the change in art style and of "cute girls doing cute things." There are definitely good points to NOT, but there are far too many things that went wrong with it that I can't consider it anything but a C-grade series at best.

I liked NOT! more as well. I could never get that much into the original, partially because I simply couldn't stand Soul and Black Star, but I also found the main trio to be very charming in this show.

As a moe fan I liked Soul Eater Not!, haven't watched the Soul Eater or read any related manga. It's a pretty fun show overall.

well it was meant to be a slice of life series. if anyone have seen toaru kagaku no railgun and K-ON! you'll get what i'm talking about though their excutions are more superior than NOT. especially railgun.

Quote:
Fan service is present but is not pervasive enough or focused on enough to be either an attracting factor (if you normally like it) or a deterrent (if you normally don't); in fact, beyond some near-nudity in one bathing and a couple of late “naked soul” scenes, its presence is infrequent.

not quite. while there are no blatant fanservice present. there is still the "psudeo yuri" aspect that have been in the more popular slice of life series like railgun and k-on. and in not's case there is definitely sign of the yuri fanservice though not as big as in the manga.

also the dub is pretty much ok. and it was a wise choice for funi to get the old cast for the old series. especially for maka's VA.definitely wouldnt sound the same if bailey wasnt voicing her. however definitely would have been better off if they had changed blackstar and soul's VA. especially when it comes to blackstar. dont get me wrong brittney sounds fine as blackstar again, unfortunately doesnt sound like blackstar at times.

which shows & proves that time can be a real bitch sometimes.

kinda the same way people was pointing out when arron dismuke was voicing alphonse for the FMA premium OVA but time have taken away the trademark voice.

for brittney's case, its the same cause after 10 years since the previous soul eater, blackstar doesnt sound right in soul eater NOT!

While Jackie's behavior towards Kim does seem to tilt in that direction, that's not the same as in Railgun and I definitely wouldn't go as far as calling it fan service.

Um, it's only been a little more than five years since the first part of the original series was dubbed, so let's not go grossly exaggerating here.
