I'm glad that this show is back. I have fond memories of laughing histerically at some of the better chapters, so hopefully I'll get to have a similar experience with the new season.

Question to whoever decides to post here: what's your opinion on Gintama's serious arcs? I've personally liked most of them (and there are some pretty epic ones coming our way too), but I know there's a large amount of people that doesn't like them as much as the comedic episodes.

What is there to really say about Gintama? That there is almost nothing in Japanese pop culture it won't parody? That it is incredibly crass 80% of the time? That is probably the funniest anime in recent history? All true, and that is why I have seen all 260 episodes 3 times or more. This is a show that has at one point or another satisfied every possible demand I have for my entertainment. More Yorozuya is never a bad thing.

A+++++++++++ rating from me

I like the serious arcs, but some of them do end up feeling very repetitious. Things like the night king or first serious shogun arc are really great. But some arcs like spider ninja (whats his name) and Obi wan not kenobi get a little too samey.

I don't particularly dislike the more serious arcs, but I definitely prefer the comedic stories. Personally, I don't think the tonal shifts that occur during the dramatic arcs really suit the series. I mean, towards the end of the Night King battle, there were two full episodes with no humor whatsoever - which is very strange for Gintama.

Also, am I the only one who thought the super-serious manga arc from late 2014 was going to be the end of the series? I don't want to spoil anything for fans who aren't current with the manga, though.

Oh! I've been meaning to ask - what's the story behind Gintoki's pained exclamation of "PSYCHO-PASS!"? Was this completely random or am I missing something super-obvious?

Maybe the fact that the second season of Psycho Pass was also never supposed to happen, or maybe because it was also a second season that was relegated to another studio, a completely different team and (as far as I know) a lower budget because of, well, reasons. Considering the scene Gintoki said "Psycho Pass", however, it was probably also a minor satirical jab at the show.

The serious arcs are what make Gintama for me to be honest. I feel like it's impressive enough that Sorachi can write so successfully with such humor, and that Sunrise has been able to adapt and extend it. But the serious arcs, specifically the ones dealing with the Bakufu and Tendoshu, really link and develop the series further (in my opinion). I find it amazing that Sorachi has found a way to link all the craziness with the serious plot line through it. which for me adds a layer of darkness that I find to be really impressive. Everyone I speak with about Gintama always asks, "Is it true Gintama does not have a plot?" But, no, Gintama does have a plot, and a pretty amazing one at that thanks to these arcs. Especially with the most recent manga arcs, jesus christ! Sorry, I really love Gintama if it isn't obvious. I'll stop rambling now Embarassed

This is an interesting viewpoint. Does it bother you that the more serious stuff is only touched upon once in a blue moon?

I can see his point. It is similar to me, really. When I was watching Gintama for the first time, I thought it was a really, really funny show, but it always stayed on the funny side of things, and even with some of the smaller "serious" arcs, stuff never really got real until the Benizakura arc.

But oh boy that arc was amazing. It made me think "so Gintama can do serious arcs as well". And it didn't surprise me because it was a serious arc, but because it was actually GOOD, and most serious arcs are of the same quality. A bit cheesy with the dialogue at times, but still with higher stakes than you'd oftenly see on a shonen manga (I don't count the not-obi wan kenobi arc as 100% serious as... well, spoiler[they were fighting Terrorist Yodas for god's sake, I can't take that seriously]).

So yeah, in all honesty, I share his opinion: Gintama is really funny, but the fact that it can blend serious arcs every full moon so well into the flow of things makes it unique in my eyes.

I also love the serious arcs as well as the comedic parts. Some of the best comedy is in those serious arcs, in my opinion. I think the part I love is that it has the things I love about shonen action shows, with none of the tedious pacing issues I can't stand. It gets right to the point, without having to get bogged down in the character development aspects which are handled through the rest of the show. Usually.

If the serious arcs occurred with more frequency, I'm not sure I'd like them as much. As it stands, I think they do a good job of periodically breaking up the craziness, but if they constituted the bulk of the series, I feel like Gintama would lose what makes it special (at least for me). I've always viewed Takasugi in the same light as Vicious from Cowboy Bebop - if we saw more of him, he wouldn't be as cool and mysterious.
