I wonder how many copies NISA sold on top of that. They sold out, so I'm guessing the grand total comes to at least 120K.

That's right and they didn't need no handshaking tickets to do that neither!

It is amazing how the series continues to go from strength to strength. The success of the movie could be incredibly high.

I think Love Live is the weakest series to top year disk sales in the past 6-7 years. All others were pretty good at least, that one was just too much.

Congratulations for having the marketing wherewithal to place the CD on a week without any of the big hitters. I wouldn't be surprised if 85k is not even Love Live's highest weekly sales. Hell, K-ON's 2nd CD sold quite a bit more than that amount and Love Live had much higher BD sales than K-ON.
Of course, this isn't to take anything away from Love Live. It has obviously mastered what otaku want to see in an idol show and has capitalized every chance it has since its humble inception. It is a true juggernaut these days. It's just that this particular news item isn't very impressive since it's more about scheduling a release for the CD rather than the resulting sales. EDIT: Corrected Love Live's CD sales. |

Too much what, exactly? It is most possibly the best series that has come out of Japan in recent years. |

I think its success comes from the fact that it has mastered the ability to appeal to as many people as possible rather than just the typical audience for a series about cute girls. The series has collaborations with brands that are aimed at a wide variety of demographics which is a testament to its far reaching success. & the show being repeated on Disney Channel shows that it has managed to somewhat bridge the gap between shoujo idol shows aimed at younger girls and the seinen idol shows aimed at the more typical otaku crowd. |

Love Live destroys Idolm@ster in sales
Idolm@ster (1st series) destroys Love Live in quality and characters and is on par with each other music-wise. Love Live just outright destroys the Cinderella Girls anime in quality and characters (it wouldn't have been the case if a better cast was chosen), it's no contest, and the music is better than Cinderella Girls. Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls (game) has significantly better characters overall than Love Live School Idol Festival. |

My issue with iDOLM@STER is there are almost too many idols and it is at the expense of character relationships. In Love Live!, the nine girls feel like a family and you can get a genuine feel of their friendship which helps add to the emotional weight to the storylines. Whereas iDOLM@STER was more of a "girl of the week" type thing for most of its run. |

Not in disagreement with your statement here, but that strictly applies to the anime when talking about the iM@S franchise. The games cover a whole lot more background for each character, and the anime simply tries to take pieces of each character's story to construct the entire anime. And the fact that the idols in iM@S all technically work solo, with the exception of certain canon units, also differs. It's quite different from μ's when they worked together from the start, with the exception of the three sub-units that were created. I'm not 100% sure about this following statement, but this is also why Love Live has more group songs with all the members than iM@S. At least, this is definitely the case at the same point in time for iM@S. |

Love Live really is the K-On! of idol anime/manga world. Anyway, congratulations to Love Live! I am so happy to be a fan of this awesome idol franchise.

I believe BiBi's "Fuyu ga Kureta Yokan" hit #2 on Oricon weekly as well (Dec 2014), making it the highest ranking franchise release alongside "Donna Toki mo Zutto" for a single. "Fuyu ga Kureta Yokan" was also certified RIAJ gold in sales.

I'm really happy for Love Live. I got hooked into this series last year towards the end of the 2nd season after seeing so much of my friends get into it. Needless to say, I have no regrets and have enjoyed this series since.
Weirdly enough I still enjoy LL and IM@S on an equal level for the most part.
Opposite for me, I found myself liking the LL characters more than the 765 Pro from the 2011 anime. Don't get me wrong, I loved the 2011 anime and the characters were neat...but just as a group overall, I felt more attached to Muse than to 765 Pro. For example, in 2011's anime, only characters I really liked / cared for were Takane, Chihaya, Miki and Hibiki. I found myself liking everybody in Muse because their stories felt so connected. 2011 focused too much of the center drama / conflict on Chihaya and Haruka akin to how CG focused too much on NG (Rin, Mio, Uzuki) during the first half of the first cour. On the other hand, the conflicts Muse faced in both seasons felt more like it revolved around all of them than it revolving on the drama of one character and everybody getting involved. Music wise, both 765 Pro and Muse's remained tied for me but I like Muse's a bit more. Especially after how the anime did Snow Halation in the 2nd season.
This is really subjective, especially what's defined by "better" to different people's standards. I've been familiar with the CG mobage long before the anime aired and while I'm disappointed characters like Kaede (one of my favorites) weren't included in the main cast (most likely due to how expensive her seiyuu is...then again they have Ranko in and she's voiced by Maaya Uchida), the fact of the matter is people have different tastes/opinions. The CG cast is huge and at the end of the day, they can't satisfy everybody. It was either a focus approach or they would have made the anime into a "group of idols" of the week to cover the extensive cast. In the end the anime still offered plenty of surprises for me like prior to it, I could barely give two cents about Miku or Minami and at the end of cour 1 they've become some of my favorites. Although there were already characters in the CG project who I liked to the begin with (Anastasia, Ranko, Rin) so I guess it balances things up. That and the CG characters picked for the main cast in the anime aren't just throw offs. They're also Master Collection characters and just as popular as some of the other characters who were instead upped as their seniors in the anime. Heck, Miku got 2nd place in the recent Cinderella Elections two months ago. As far as songs go...I'm going to have to agree with you on that. Only units songs I really like from the anime are Rosenberg Engel, Love Laika, Asterisk and New Generation's songs. Dekoration and Candy Island's felt a bit vapid in comparison. CG itself (in terms of the mobage's CDs) only has a handful of group songs compared to Muse who's discography mostly revolves on group songs. CG emphasized more on unit songs / solo singles. Still, I would be lying if I said I didn't want to see more of the seniors make more appearances in the 2nd cour and work more with the main cast now that the story has the Cinderella Project in higher standing than they were at the start by the time it starts. A recent interview in Dengeki with the anime staff stated that they've made intentional parallels with the 2011 anime in CG.
Basically this and it applied for the 2011 anime as well. Like for example, Azusa got her episode just for the sake of getting an episode without any actual development. Takane and Hibiki's episodes were outright overshadowed by Kuroi's antics. The gigantic chunk of central character conflict and development still loomed on Chihaya and Haruka and to a smaller extent, Miki when she had that small fit before the 765 Pro All Stars Concert. Or when there is some pretense of development, it kinda gets shafted to the side for quirks. Like Makoto had her whole episode about wishing to be a bit more feminine and in the end she just kind of swept it under the rug. Yukiho developed well in the anime but even then her more shy / timid traits still surface so they can be played for laughs. Idolmaster (including 765 Pro, Million Live, CG, Side M) as you stated all go for a variety type of thing (i.e. ex female delinquents, ex weather forecasters in their 20s, ex lawyers, ex models, normal students, etc, etc) while Love Live (including the upcoming new team from LL Sunshine) focuses on a waaaay smaller cast in order to get some solid development around. |
