Is this for Japan or for the United States?

I'm still skeptical that there's enough of a domestic market for one linear anime channel to be profitable (unless it's super premium), and now Viz wants to split the audience?

It has nothing to do with splitting the audience. It has to do with the fact that ADV controls the Anime Network. Tell me do you want to pay a chief competitor?

In the end Cartoon Network will probably start some kind of Toonami channel, and the failed anime network willl fold into the one with the marketing budget and title variety.

I think if Viz went in with Bandai and Turner (since the latter two already have a good standing together) and created something that wasn't exactly a "toonami channel" with some Adult Swim thrown in, but a litle diverse in the audience, it could work. Of course they would give it a mangeled japanese word for the name (mizugi -> miguzi) with the repetative animations, but we can all get past that. It is presently pheasable with the number of titles they can get their hands on.

...which is exactly why they're looking for someone to come in for a month or two, do the analysis, come up with a paper, and get out, several thousand dollars the richer. Although I'm not quite sure why they want to keep this in-house and don't just outsource to some media consulting firm or another...

Perhaps they have a Marketing Strategy that needs to be kept under wraps for the time being. The less anyone outside of Viz knows about it, then better.

It's also a sort of....uncovered feild. I think it would be easier for someone who is already comfertable with the subjects to handle that sort of research than bringing in a person, or in this case, a company, who has no prior familiarity with it.

But to be completly honest, it looks like its just a summer gig....so they may just half-heartedly looking into it.

If they go through with this, I hope they make it more available for people. I don't get some channels that have anime and anime is not a big thing where I live so I doubt requesting the channels I don't get will help. Sad

Yes, it's just a summer job at Viz. But what a great opportunity for a budding marketer: Determine if there's a viable USA market for a Viz anime network.

The Anime Network launching of a traditional scheduled cable feed was a wake-up call to the other anime distributors. If ADV were to succeed in killing off Toonami/Adult Swim, Anime Unleashed, Asia Street and other anime blocks, then Viz and everybody else would face the prospect of dealing with their chief rival in order to get their shows on TV.

Is there enough of a USA anime market to support 2 full-time anime networks? Much as I love anime, the hard reality is that it's still an open question whether the market would support even one 24/7 anime network.

If ADV wants TAN to be a money maker, they'll have to open it to other distributors at reasonable rates. ADV has a huge inventory of shows, but any 24/7 network eats up programming at a phenomenal rate. And some of the ADV shows are old dogs. ADV still has the hurdle of convincing cable/satellite operators to carry TAN instead of something else more mainstream, and getting a reasonable deal on carriage. Now if Viz were to enter the field with a second 24/7 anime network, the hurdles of finding carriage would be much higher.

ADV and Viz are giants in the anime/manga field and household words to us anime fans. But they are unknowns to the larger general public, which remains largely unaware that anime and manga even exist. (^_*)

Just like to add the a "Toonami Channel " already exists in the UK that can be picked up on Sky Digital channel 621. It's called "Toonami" strangly enough. Wink It mostly transmits what they call "action cartoons". There are some anime, like "Big O", "Outlaw Star" "Ultimate Shyte" (aka Ultimate Muscle), the usual "Dragonball (whatever)" durge, and they have just started transmiting "DuelMasters" (sort of like Yu-Gi-Oh, only slightly different). The rest is US made "action hero" type genre "Batman", "Justice League" "He-man" etc. Oh and "Teen Titans" the first US made anime TV series. (or at least it could be if it had better writers and director.) Wink

Why do I get the feeling that the rest of us are getting a raw deal because, as always, we don't live in Middle America?

You would think that to get a good test, they'd hit some places like Boston, San Diego, etc. Places where there are people who actually follow this stuff (aka places with large animje Cons). I guess that's planned for the second stage of development, though.

I agree with you guys, I think Viz & ADV need to join forces on the Anime Network business rather then trying to compete with each other. ADV has a whole crapload of titles licensed, Viz doesn't have so many but what it does have are almost all hits(plus experience with tv releases), I think the whole project has a much better chance of suceeding if they pooled their resources on a Anime Network.

I think ADV needs help. Sure, they have a lot of liscences with them, but 1 month and 20 marathons later, they'll be pulling out the re-runs. Really, for something like this to be well sucessful, they need to learn to open their ears and soak up the sun (I just realized that last statement didn't make any sense at all =P.).

**shutters at the thought of various Eva marathon repeats.** Anime cry

By the American definition of anime, Teen Titans isn't anime because it's American. So you really couldn't say that it's the first American anime series because the statement contradicts itself.

To add on, Teen Titians was definently not the first anime-inspired U.S. TV series. And sure as hell was not the trash known as Totally spies. =/

I think it would be wiser to keep feeding programs to other channels' anime programming blocks instead of making another network, which the market would NOT support. Since ADV has its own channel, Viz and other companies should be pouring love into Adult Swim, Anime Unleashed, etc. Also the new up-and-coming Imaginasia network promises to have a lot of anime. I just hope I'll be able to get that channel! Wink
