Surprised this finally got a review(considering it's one week from being a year old). For me the story is a real page-turner;it really sucks you in till the very end. One thing that nagged me though was other Kirie and Shuichi most of the people seemed not to really give a shit at the gruesome shit that was happening around them(till the last volume).Looking forward to the Gyo deluxe edition!

We're going to be clearing out some of the reviews backlog here so be prepared to see some older stuff for a little while.

I saw someone write that Shuichi's reaction of almost-catatonic despair makes him the only sane character. Even Kirie is weirdly subdued in her reaction to the problem as a whole; there's a part where she cuddles into Shuichi's shoulder like a normal teenaged lover while he has the most ill, grim look on his face. This contrast must be intentional.
This contributes to the atmosphere of irrationality, but from a practical standpoint it also allows most of the series to function as a string of one-shots loosely tied together by setting.
Some of the stories are flops, though. The jack-in-the-box thing? The several chapters in the hospital that have precious little to do with the spiral theme and ends without any kind of resolution?
Overall it is very good, though. It's a really good execution of Lovecraftian kind of thing where humans face an alien threat that cannot be comprehended let alone combated and it's not even possible to tell if the threat is aggression or if people are just in the way.

I am not really a fan of graphic horror, but I still like to try some occasionally. This seems like it might be worth a look.
Would I be missing much if I read the singles that Viz released in 2007/8?
The reason that I ask is that my library has the singles, but not the omnibus.

I read some of this manga a couple years. It's the only one manga that's actually scared and really disturbed me ( the story of the lady who saw her husband wrapped like a spiral in a barrel and who goes crazy in fear at the sight of anything with spirals really left an impact on me) Good review, although some of the stories can get pretty ridiculous.

This has been on my to-read list for awhile, due to getting reviewed in Linkara's Longbox of the Damned vlogs. I didn't realize there was a 3-in-1 edition out there but I'll have to try and pick it up before too long.

Uzumaki is definitely Ito's best work that's been published in the US and it may be one of the best manga period imo. There is something so awesome that he took after Umezu in creating worlds that are both frighteningly gross and morbidly funny out of its pure strangeness (although not quite as juvenile as Umezu).
It also works well because it shows a combination of what we usually get in horror manga (or horror in general) with it starting out fairly episodic and then transitioning into that awesomely tense continuation in the last volume. Even better, the last time I read this was in one sitting and it worked really well in that regard, so the new edition seems more than worth buying if you haven't read it already.
I'm also assuming this has done well for viz over the years? If so, I would hope they would translate more of Ito's work.

I actually wrote this review a year ago (I write a lot), but you know what? The book haunts me still. Talk about a horror masterpiece, even if one of the seeming prerequisites of the genre is stupidity on the part of the main characters. (I would have gotten the hell out of town in chapter one!)

I don't think so. When I got my hardcover, I flipped through my singles to see if I could find any major differences, and the only thing I noticed was the hardcover had a few more color pages. Even the lost chapter (Galaxies) was present in the singles edition.

@Oriana3k
Thank you.
That makes things a lot easier for me.
Since there are only three volumes I will definitely give Uzumaki a try.
And thank you, Princess Irene, for the review.

It sounds interesting. I've had a huge itch for some good horror lately (I was planning on watching Zodiac later tonight), so I may have to pick this up. Thanks for your review. It'll be cool to see more older reviews finally get un-backlogged.

I've read this manga many years ago and if it was published where I live, I'd definitely buy it. It's a both a great read and good enough to have in your collection.
