Don't you just love it when they do this? It begs the question, why weren't they in the original release? In fairness Viz should offer anyone who purchased to original volumes an even exchange, but they won't. Rolling Eyes

*Blink* More content and you...complain? Well, at least you didn't protest the new smaller size...

No, more content is great. But you have to think of the people who bought the series before this revised release. They spent hard brass for those volumes, now Viz wants them to to do it all again to get what they should have got in the first place. Not very fair, Don't you think?

I'm excited for it. I'm glad that VIZ is catching on to the smaller/cheaper format. Makes for much more manga in my collection.

They really need to re-release Sanctuary in this format because my books are tattered and beat to death. Embarassed

I think that the smaller format with the extras is good. But I don't like the fact that they did it in a re-release in a smaller format. Now people that are not done collecting the manga have to decide if they should continue collecting the old fromat, or if they want to switch to the new format. I personaly will stick to the old format because I like to see the set of manga's sitting on the shelf looking uniform instead of the jump to a smaller size half-way through.

be glad if you haven't dumped $ into the Ranma 1/2 series. that would tick me off because they are re-releasing in the new size AND around book 22 or so they started going to the smaller size and cheaper price after HOW many years of $15+ and the bigger books. lol, that would tick me off big time.

Alita, tho, I only was ever able to find a couple books and nothing's in order, so I'm glad for the re-release so I can start reading it from the start.

Are they gonna be doing this smaller size with the SJ and Pulp titles? Proly Off Topic for here but Viz is Viz so I threw it in.

It's not "fair?" Oi. How old are you? Re-releases happen all the time. Take LoTR for example. They released the regular dvds first, then half a year later a collectors edition with tons of stuff. If I was aware of it before I bought the regular dvd, I would of waited for the collectors edition.

Your claim on deserving the new extras because you paid for the original really makes no sense. There are re-releses all the time. You knew what you were paying for when you bought it originally. You got what you paid for, be happy.

Tokyopop is re-releasing Magic Knight Rayearth. I already bought the original they had out, and now I've bought the rerelease. >.> I didn't demand that since they rereleased it, now flipped, that they give me a new version flipped. And in Japan, the Sailor Moon manga are all being rereleased, with new covers, color pages, and touched up art work. I haven't heard a single person say "thats no fair, I already bought the original series" on the Sailor Moon rerelease.

Tho the new format/price may piss off some older fans, the point is to bring in NEW fans as well. And who wouldn't rather cough up $9.99 (or less with the discount options) for a book than $18+ for a graphic novel. (for us old farts it's like buy one get one lol) But seriously, I love it because I walk away with a lot more manga than ever before -especially when the local Waldenbooks has the buy 4 get the 5th free. Laughing Plus with the re-releases, I'm hoping for the chance to replace some of my older collections that have just been beat to crap from reading and rereading. Tho the titles I like aren't all that popular Sad

It's nice that Viz is re-releasing the original series with some nice extras; I only hope that the series will be re-released unflipped like "Maison Ikkoku".

Actually, it doesn't beg the question because you used the phrase begs the question incorrectly. Cool

Why not in the original release? Why pay more to get the original author extra stuff on something you have no idea of how well it would work in america? Why reverse the art when everyone here reads left to right? Why charge 16+ for HQ paper and sound effects? Why charge cheaper when we have no reason to charge cheaper *At the time they were really the only ones with graphic novels out*

I'm afraid your nonage betrays your comprehension. I did not buy the original Alita manga, which is just as well. There's a big difference between superficial changes like a new cover art, or just flipping the pages to service western reading culture, and selling a story with large bits left out for whatever reason only to re-release the story later with all the missing bits restored. especially if the consumer had no idea that the original purchase was so edited. It makes one feel cheated, and warey to buy any others for fear of the samething. I care not about the size of a book as long as the complete story is included.

Talk about unfair, I bought all the "comic book" style manga! I wish they had finished last order in that format at least. Yea it does suck you don't get the extra's the first time, but you could always try sellin off your old GN's to help pay for the newest ones if you HAVE to have the extras.

Hey if this re-release does good maybe more companies will start get the idea that people prefer an unflipped re-release with extras for older series. More is always a good thing.....Now if only Darkhorse had originally released Gunsmith Cats unflipped. Now that was unfair, to the art that is Razz Hopefully they'll re-release the GN's unflipped like Viz.

Yeah I agree with that, fortunetly for me I only have 3 of the old books, Angel's Assecion, Angel of Chaos, and Battle Angel Alita. I actually like this old books quite a bit but I didn't know they were edited. I was thinking about getting all the books but now that this came up, I kinda don't know anymore... :?

Thing is, was it a deliberate method of screwing the consumer or because Viz was one of the first to publish GNs that there were licensing issues, cost issues, or generally the same problems cable and networks have with over-censoring material for the ohhh so sensitive American public. Plus, books ('standard' and GNs) get new print runs all the time with edits, corrections, reformats, new covers etc. You don't HAVE to have all your books matching in size and style, sure I agree it LOOKS nice but no one is saying you HAVE to re-buy anything.

I guess I'm really at a loss as to why so many people find this a negative thing? So Viz decided to follow in TPs footsteps with size and price and probably decided "well let's do this right since we're redoing things anyway" and put back in the missing material.

As for flipping, I hate the artwork flipped to Westernize it. It takes away from the flow of the story and the true intentions of the artists. I'd rather read back to front and have the art flow the way it was created to. Plus it just makes more sense to be read that way. As would flipping Western comics to Easternize them -it just looks shoddy.

Wow, I'm surprised about all the controversy.

Okay, the re-releases have become a standard at Viz and my guess is that they are probably going to do it for most their titles.

Reason is, that back when these older titles were released, the standard was for a larger, flipped manga. Now the standard has changed, and they're re-issuing the manga for two purposes. First to introduce new readers, and second to make them available in what is the new standard format.

As for the extras, two notes. First, I've seen them, and I don't particularly think they are worth re-buying the series for, except for huge GUNM fans (like myself <sigh>). Secondly, as far as I am aware, these extras were not available when Viz frist released Alita. This is to say, that the Japanese release of these extras occurred after Viz licensed & released Alita, they were part of a Japanese re-release in a larger, "phone-book" format.

Yes, it's annoying, but the only thing Viz can be faulted for is the way the seperated the volumes (they are however in the proper order, don't know where you got the idea that they were out of order).
