Hey does anyone no why Shin-chan and Doraemon haven't aired all March apart from the crossover special? since it isn't a normal absence.

Apparently they won't be airing this week either (and they didn't air last week). Maybe some special programs are being broadcasted instead for spring break ?

On a side-note, ratings are pretty mediocre at the moment : barely over 8 for Conan, barely over 7 for One Piece, under 5 for Toriko, under 4 for Pokemon ( Shocked ). It's like the summer slump has already arrived. Laughing

I wonder if the "aging in Japan" is taking effect with there now being just far too few children to get good day time anime ratings anymore?

The ageing effect started around 8-10 years ago and it has just gone from bad to worse. I thought maybe it had sort of stabilised but ratings for most shows just keep declining with no end in sight.

Only the ones with an adult fanbase of a decent size still seem to manage getting ok ratings (though very mediocre ones when compared to 10-15 years ago...).

If is the age problem why does Sazae-san still rates 17 and chibi 11?

Note: I think One Piece is having bad ratings(well, bad ratings for One Piece), because the anime right now is having a lot of problems in pacing and animation quality.

Well they had higher ratings too back in the day. compared to the other shows. Sazae-san would average around 27-28% going over 30% regularly. Chibi Maruko-chan got the highest rating ever for an anime around 20 years ago with an incredible 39.9% (even beating Sazae-san's 39.4% in 1979).

The reason they still do better than the others (though as I said they still have declined, Chibi Maruko-chan used to go up to 14-15% just a few years ago and Sazae-san has had a harder time crossing the 20% mark) is because they have a bigger appeal to the adult crowd and even the elderly than the others (especially Sazae-san) while still managing to have a big chunk of the declining kid audience watching.

Here's a demographic breakdown from october 2011 representing Sazae-san, Chibi Maruko-chan, Conan, One Piece, Toriko, Pokemon and other shows :

世帯 個人.KID TEN M1 M2 M3 F1 F2 F3

M1 : men 20-34 years old
M2 : men 35-49 years old
M3 : men over 50 years old
same for women with F1, F2, F3.

As you can, Sazae-san is the highest everywhere and appeals to all ages. Chibi Maruko-chan does decently with every demographic as well. On the other hand, One Piece and Toriko are quite a flop among the elderly (especially women) while Conan fails to appeal to full grown men. That's why they don't reach the level of Chibi Maruko-chan, never mind the hights of Sazae-san.

That's also why One Piece was much higher when Dragon Ball Kai aired before it. The demographic breakdown of the time showed a significant increase among the older, much older crowd, precisely the one the One Piece anime traditionnally doesn't appeal to. Those people probably watched Dragon Ball because of nostalgia and since One Piece aired after they would stick around. But once Dragon Ball Kai stopped airing, they just left hence One Piece ratings declining and going back to pre-Dragon Ball Kai levels. I bet you the Dragon Ball/One Piece/Toriko special will have great ratings precisely because it will attract all age groups (except maybe older women).

All of a sudden these are bad ratings? Relax people most of these shows get a point higher on most weeks. It's just a low week. It happens in television.

Seems I underestimated Level 5's fujoshi domination.. they even got 35+ year old women attracted to those boys. That's more women watching Danbell Senki/Inazuma Eleven then men watching Pretty Cure.

Also interesting to see just how uninterested kids are in Toriko. Seems like it's the 20-40 males that keep it afloat.

Some demographic breakdowns can be quite surprising. I remember seeing one where Gundam Age got 0.0% among the kids crowd. Or Hunter x Hunter having something around 1% among the kids and not much higher for the teens but having a good folllowing with the 20~29-year-old women which is unusual for a shonen.

I don't find that surprising about Hunter x Hunter to be honest. Togashi's work in general seems to skew females more than males considering pretty much the entire main cast is young boys and you have a lot of yaoi undertones.

WOW, Shocked that was a detailed response. It was so informative!(I wanted to see this kind of information every year). One thing Kutsu, does a decrease in 2-3 points in the ratings is a big decrease of viewers? In the last weeks One Piece as lost 2-3 points while detective Conan haven't. The way I see this is because of the Punk Hazard arc, in this arc the animation and the pacing is so bad that maybe turned some viewers off. Why do you think One Piece is decreasing in ratings?

On a weekly basis, it's not that significant as all anime fluctuate depending on such trivial matters such as holidays, special events or even the weather. However, if the average ratings has indeed decreased by 2-3% then that's quite noticeable (1% in the ratings is about 350-400 000 households with the average japanese household size being 2.4 so you do the maths).

The One Piece anime has been pretty slow for the past 7-8 years now so I don't see why that would suddenly cause a dip in ratings. I think the reason is much more straighforward than that : Toriko has been struggling in the ratings compared to Dragon Ball Kai or even Gege no Kitaro, especially in the past few months, and so it makes it hard(er) for One Piece to pull above 7-8%.
