This is the result of making Japan wait for a new EVA film, lol. Isn't this one also majorly new compared to the other two?

More than 3 years since the last film and it all just exploded into the situation it ended up in now. Somehow... I wonder if Neutral|/FINAL or whatever will take as long to get to theaters and will debut in 2015/2016?

The first film was delayed from summer 2007 to fall 2007, the second film from 2008 to sometime in 2009, and this current film which was supposed to be a double feature with FINAL was delayed from the summer of 2008 to autumn 2012. (though that schedule was extremely unrealistic, I suppose) Who knows when the last movie will come out and could it even outperform the performance of 3.0?

3.0 also had the highest weekend opening for any Japanese movie ever as well as having the highest weekend opening for any animated movie ever, both of which were previously Howl's Moving Castle.

Amazing how strong the Evangelion fervor has remained.

I think Eva was a sleeping giant...

When you think about it, though, this isn't so surprising.

Both 1.0 and 2.0 were substantially similar to the original TV series, and people probably stayed home. But as word got out about what happened at the end of 2.0, and then word of mouth about 3.0 spread nearly instantly over the internet, the masses of fans came out in force.

Actually I could tell this would break records on Monday last week when I went into the office. Why? Because whenever I said to anyone "I went to the new eva movie yesterday" the first thing _everyone_ said was "Wait, don't spoil it!!!".
The 20 something female part timers, the 30 year old male contract worker, even my 50 year old boss, all with the identical reaction.

Right then I could tell that it would break out into the mainstream.

Seems like they were anticipating larger crowds this time around. In Osaka City, the first two films played at Cinem@rt Shinsaibashi and Cine Libre Umeda, which are smaller and attract more art-house films, while the third is playing at Namba Parks Cinema, Umeda Burg 7, and both of the Toho Cinemas locations (Umeda and Namba) instead, which are all much larger and cater to mainstream audiences with blockbusters and such.
