I wanted more from the ending... I guess I can hope there will be a nice OVA that raps things up?

for as much as i loved this series i kinda agree that the sci-fi element didn't work out for it, for the most part whilst it was a small thing it was fine until it became more of the focus at the end and then it just seemed like something hashed together to justify the whole idea of a sci-fi element in the first place
given more work into adding a more seemless sci-fi element, this series could have been a real big winner for the year

I was actually somewhat impressed by how the ending pretty much let you know how it turned out, without overplaying it. You had to be paying attention, but all THAT closely.
If the DVDs sell well enough in Japan, we will probably get an OAV similar to the one for Please Teacher. I'd be happy to buy the full set on a nice Blu Ray pack for R1.

I agree that mostly things worked out. I mean, I noticed Rinnon giving the MIB guys the spaceship details, and I saw the last seen with her wearing that ugly poncho thing... but I guess I just feel really bad for Tanigawa. I did throughout the whole show though, so maybe that's no surprise.
Edit: Forgive me for using Japanese in my post, English is not my first language. I will correct.

It certainly looked and sounded great, and a few scenes were marvelous, but despite the show's earnestness, I never really felt convinced that the two characters should have fallen so hard for each other by the end. I really, really wanted it to be the next JC Staff romantic wonder work (see Toradora, Nodame, or Honey and Clover,) but Ano Natsu just never felt even half as genuine as those shows, and that broke my heart. The supporting character's relationships felt less out of place, as their feelings were established as given before the first episode, but the developments in Ichika and Kaito's relationship never felt believable.
That said, it was a nice show; I don't feel like I wasted my time (especially because of that amazing ending theme. ) I'm just disappointed is all. /o\

I think there will be a manga adaptation of this as I've heard from somewhere before.
Anyways, great review. I was very surprised when I first watched this and had an urge to drop @ one point. However, I kept watching the series and didn't regret a single minute of it. It has romance, action, great OST (in the later episodes) and a intriguing storyline. The characters also performs their roles well (especially Remon hehe....)
I'm thinking of re-watching the series on CR tbh.

Although Kaito and Ichika's relationship was rather unbelievable, they did suffer in the end so it's ok I guess. I really love the supporting cast in this anime... especially Lemon! Badass MIB agent ftw!
Overall, this series was great, best of winter 2012 (besides Nisemonogatari). Tatsuyuki Nagai has done it again. He should get an award, seriously.

They went further than I expected in terms of concluding things, so I don't see the need. Unless you're talking about find out exactly how Ichika managed to return to Earth, in which case I'm right there with you.

The main reason to watch this series was the mighty force of nature known to us mortals as Remon. The rest of it was pleasant and sweet, though, and I it always mangaed to put a smile on my face. I'm glad I watched it.

Quote: | And in a world where male-targeted romance is synonymous with harems and dating sims, the idea of a monogamous lead couple is practically revolutionary.
|
Although Waiting in the Summer is not exactly a harem (there is one small arc where the series plays around with the genre), I wouldn't call a love triangle revolutionary, especially if you are going to consider such situations as having a "monogamous lead couple" as relationships like this that are all over romance stories. Aquarion Evol, which aired in the same season, can be argued to have this exact "revolutionary" relationship you are describing, just to throw out one example.
Quote: |
Almost as revolutionary—and probably just as surprising—is how the show avoids modern gimmicks and gives off a throwback aura.
|
Really? Kanna's relationship with Kaito is clearly a modern gimmick of a girl being in love with a male character before he gets stolen away by the mysterious girl who just suddenly appeared. There is also the small arc about Kaito meeting his childhood friend who of course gets rejected as is the case for most childhood friends in romance/harem.
Quote: |
It harkens to the days when a male protagonist chose one girl and you knew they'd end up together, when it was about really falling in love and not setting off "flags" or choosing "routes" (game logic ought to stay strictly in games),
|
What you have just described here is one of the main complaints about the harem genre; the fact that despite there being lots of potential love interests, it's clearly obvious that the main heroine is going to win in the end. Why else would Ichigo 100%'s ending still be considered a breakthrough in the harem genre today if such wasn't the case? Additionally, Waiting in the Summer still follows this trend, with things such as The date between Kaito and Kanna and spending the majority of the series hinting that Ichika will leave at the end, leaving the viewer to speculate that Kaito will still potentially end up with another girl.
Quote: |
the series also cleverly captures the nostalgia of anime's "good old days", when romantic heroines were more than just figurines waiting to be marketed.
|
It took me one google search to find official art promotions of the female cast in bathing suits posing for the viewer, and given how well the anime sold, there will definitely be figures of the cast out there in the future, as was the case for many anime that aired in the "good old days" of anime.
Why you bothered to include what you said here only to somewhat contradict yourself in the next paragraph really ruins what would be an otherwise decent review.

Kaito would've never ended up with Kanna. No matter how hard you think they "hinted" at it, which they didn't*. Never. Remember that time at the end between Ichika leaving and before she came back? Notice how those two weren't together? If what you said would've happened, then Kaito would've been just settling for Kanna since Ichika was gone (and he didn't if she'd ever be back), and he would've never done that. He loved Ichika and had ZERO feelings for Kanna and he wasn't going to be her pity boyfriend. If anyone for any moment speculated that he'd just go Kanna because Ichika wouldn't be there, then, well, they weren't paying attention, because that kind of action is not in Kaito's DNA.
*That wasn't even a date, at least not to Kaito. That was Kaito's excuse to get out of the house to avoid any possible misunderstanding from Ichikca. Nothing more, nothing less. Kanna tried to use it to get a leg up, but it was never a "date".

I found the supporting cast to be a lot better than the two main characters.
I do agree about Lemon. She was a riot throughout the series.

For a anime like this, it needs a ova at least and I would not mind if there was a movie where the group gets in contact with nasa so they can go to space and see her some how.

Loved this series and thought for sure they'd run into the cast from Please Teacher at the end, (at least Mizuho & Kei). I will be eagerly waiting for this on disc, hopefully on Blu-ray.

This just reminded me too much of Onegai Teacher!
So it was hard to hate this series since I was so fond of the "original" that this is obviously taken from. (with a few tweaks that is)
I was infatuated to begin with, but gradually I started to loose interest. Maybe since it's all done now, I can just marathon it on crunchyroll and see if it becomes any better
