Why would they say no to Aronofsky but yes to Lin? This is a big drop in terms of talent involved...

clip: Aronofsky didn't have the money or connections at the time. Personally, I wanted to see Lin reboot Highlander myself, but it was not to be.

Agreed. Unless Aronofsky wanted to make some crazy changes, this doesn't make ANY sense (even for the mega-cluster f that is the Japanese Publishing & IP Business).
One the one hand you have an Academy Award calibre director (Black Swan & The Wrestler), while on the other you have the daughter of WWE nepotism and a guy who's directed mostly B-grade films and some TV comedies.... What?! I may like Community, but in my mind, I can't imagine what the Japanese rights holders were thinking. If it were mine and a director like Aronofsky was interested, I'd give him the freakin' green light. Just another case of WTF?! Japan. |

Oh, so B-grade movies earn 605 million dollars at the box office these days? Wow, I never figured. |

Carey: Yack it up, but at least Justin Lin can come up with original material. And don't give me this rant about nepotism in an industry in which women and Asian industry people are more likely to be denied major gigs than a white guy who bombed with The Fountain. Oh, and for the record, Justin isn't oblivious to the manga scene, as he has seen the Initial D movie, and was originally attached to the Oldboy movie.
I'm guessing they were thinking that Lin, unlike Darren, had the money, and actually bothered to trace the rights-holders to the source, rather than give up. Apparently, though, if @tomomachi is correct, the people behind Road to Perdition didn't officially get permission to remake it. |

Wow, not one, not two, but THREE Fast and the Furious sequels under his belt. Clearly the resume of a man you want to give the rights to adapt a classic manga series.

Road to Perdition was loosely based on Lone Wolf and Cub as well, right?
/my only knowledge about the franchise |

Right on. Nepotism is a nasty charge, especially since I have it on good authority (CAA friend) that they're planning to stay close to the original vision, and not WWE it up. Give peace a chance. |

I'm all for a LW&C remake but it all depends on how they plan to make it (e.g. where is it set? What era? Cast? etc. etc). I know they think of Kinnosuke Nakamura (TV) as Ogami Ito in Japan, but I definitely prefer Tomisaburo Wakayama (Films).
Hopefully they stick to a Japanese/Asian cast, jidai geki samurai exploitation style. My preference, but probably not profitable in these days. |

My CAA buddy the other day told me that Justin Lin is going to keep to the true storyline for the Lone Wolf and Cub production. That’s good, because I wasn’t happy about the Aronofsky-makes-a-Western idea at all.

Spoofer: Perdition is inspired by LW+C, though not legally, it seems.
Avi: I'd be surprised if they got it off the ground at all, considering it'd also remind people too much of Perdition now. But I don't see the point in being too close to the source material when they already have LA movies in Japan. soh: I want Tadanobu Asano as the lead. porou: If they're just going to do another samurai movie, they might as well pay the Japanese. Hell, I'm still baffled at why they want to go for a similar approach w/ the Keanu 47 Ronin. |
