I don't think anyone could've written a better review that captured the essence of Yotsuba. It certainly reflected my feelings in such a way that saved me from trying to express them on my own!

Yay, Yotsuba! I'm still working my way through Vol. 4, and it's taking me a while to get through each volume, but it's really enjoyable. I often find myself reading bits outloud to my boyfriend, so he had to start reading it himself.
Carl mentioned that Yotsuba&! gets recommended to kids a lot. But I also see a lot of people recommend it to people who are learning Japanese and want something simple and fun to read.
After reading this review, I'm really looking forward to seeing how much the art and story will improve with each volume.

Great review! I think you're absolutely right about the heart of what makes Yotsuba great.

You bring up an interesting point about kids and Yotsuba. I think you're right that you have to be older to appreciate certain aspects of it. But I wouldn't call it a "terrible lie" to say that kids love it. My third grade sister loves Yotsuba; she just loves it for different reasons than I do. It has a dual appeal, for kids reading it as kids and for adults reading it thinking about being kids. The same sort of thing happened when I took her to see Toy Story 3. We both loved it, but it was a different experience. You might say that the experience is deeper for adults, but I wouldn't downplay the appeal for kids.

I didn't know other people did this! Anime hyper Yotsuba is my favorite manga for practicing reading Japanese. It's paced in a way that it's OK when I have to go slowly, and the language isn't too complicated for me to understand.

I like Yotsuba, but I kinda hope it ends soon. I mean, ten more volumes of cuteness could get really boring.

Great review! Very touching too! I never thought about Yotsuba& being appreciated by adults too! I've read the first 5 Yotsuba& volumes from ADV Manga at my library. I don't really know how Yen Press is doing with the series, but based on the review, I expect it's good! This is such a fun series to read!

The problem is that Yotsuba says things that are funny but those are words that a 6 year old child would NEVER say. They are meant to be funny but can be understood as funny only by grown ups.
