Awesome! We need more hard-hitting shows that aren't afraid to portray anime fans as obsessive, creepy losers. This will be the best example of a hatchet jo...errr, broadcast public service since Tom Hanks' documentary Mazes and Monsters.

Wow, A legal drama that will have a character who is a anime geek. I hope they don't make this anime geek a criminal in the style of this person. I hope they don't sensationalize this the way how video gamer are portrayed as school shooter, or have no life.

Oooh, after the recent Law & Order's depiction of gamers, I'm just bursting with anticipation over how they'll portray us! A possible murder suspect too! We're totally on the rise, eh?

Course, since this Thomas guy is involved, maybe it actually won't be that bad, but still...

Awkward and Depressed? shooting parents? Finally a TV personality I can relate to!

But no really, it's one case on an episodic series. It's not like there's a whole series being broadcast on a major network which follows the daily life of your average weeaboo kid. The character will appear in this case, and won't ever occur again.. Not really that big of deal...

and of course it's going to be all negative stereotypes. We're talking about mainstream tv here. They're gonna make all the anime fans lonely depressed Hot Topic-shopping teenagers who yell at their parents.

Yeah, I remember that episode (it was actually Law & Order: SVU). Well, I hope this episode of The Whole Truth doesn't make people think anime fan into evil psychopath the same way video gamer as school shooting homicidal sociopathic psychopath.

Idk, thats pretty accurate. Because I watch anime, I'm alone and depressed, and will most likely kill my parents. Because I watch anime. Or at least, that's what every moron who watches that show will assume.

Actually the concept of the show sounds rather interesting, at least it beats yet another Law & Order spin off.
Legal dramas "profile" subcultures all the time, they need to spice up the backstories of their perps and I guess an anime geek adds more variety to to the usual line up of domestic abusers, drug dealers and cult members. Nothing special just lazy writing.

....unless it turns out that the "whole truth" is that the kid didn't do it but everyone thinks he did because of negative stereotyping. It's not like the article is going to give away the twist at the end.

Frankly, the whole series doesn't appeal to me, but that's mostly because The Wire has ruined me for every other crime-series (halfway through season 4 now).

The difference is real people die during school shootings, and they get covered on national news. This is just yet another court-based drama on TV. One episode with some crazy Japanophile isn't going to make everyone seriously investigate this stuff like it'll kill people... (Though, there is always the whole child porn issue with lolicon. Maybe they're touch on that? Would've made it more interesting than a parent slaying)

Of course they're gonna play stereotypes of the kid. It's not that they're making some statement through this episode that people who watch Japanese cartoons are gonna go on killing sprees. No, it's a court based drama. They need action, they need a killing. That's the story, the whole focus of the TV series. Only, for this episode, the writers decided to spice it up. They decided in stead of yet another plain-jane teenager, they decided to chuck in the "exotic culture" of a modern weeaboo. So when they're spicing this up to make it different from the last teen slaying court-case TV episode, they have to be sure to include all kinds of depressed and socially awkward stereotypes. I mean, they're talking about a kid who killed his parents here. It wouldn't make sense if some none-depressed and popular, well befriended average foreign-cartoon watching Joe killed his parents. Of course they're not gonna use this episode as some sort of gateway message to "mainstream America" about how weeaboos can be average people too. Because it's a fictitious court show where people deal with murders. The episode will be forgotten by the time the next episode finishes...

I really don't think it's that big a deal in these sort of shows. It's not like they only "target" the geek side. I forget which one it was, but I remember watching a legal drama episode where a cheerleader was the culprit (and I'm sure there are other examples). See, it's kind of like how South Park mocks everyone so nobody should be offended, you know?

All this makes me wonder is why every single drama series on network TV is either about cops, doctors, or both cops and doctors. Razz
