Wow, hearing from Erica Friedman was a real treat. As both a lesbian and a yuri/yaoi fan, she's kinda my hero. What a cool lady!

Oh come on it's gundam, you get promoted for gassing a colony. Commiting genocide makes you a go-getter.

I don't think anyone liked Night Raid in the first place outside of the people reviewing it for ANN. I don't remember it being like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood when 50 milliion watched the first two shows, then 60 thousand watched the rest. Also from what I remember the controversy was the fact that the show quite clearly blames the japanese for everything.

This bit with Hetalia is akward just because if I remember right Zac hated it.

Most of the yuri I read are shonen series where the yuri is an additional fetish like in Negima, and the Mai franchise (Mai-Hime, and Mai-Otome). I think Gunsmith Cats is really the only series I read where lesbians are a center focus and even that's clearly a fetish for the mangaka I have never seern Utena simply because the main villain reminds me of The Todd from Scrubs, and I can't take the series seriously. That and the ending of the movie really makes me question if the director has an another purpose for showing two hot women naked.

I don't think you can get people to buy anime, they just don't care to these people it's just a cheap entertainment. I don't think it's emtionial immaturity, because I have seen grown adults who simply don't care about people other than their own ideas.

Now I don't see anything wrong with complaining. I mean if a works sucks, than I am going to voice it. I am not going to pretend that Goro Taniguchi and Seiji Mizushima are not overrated. On the other hand I am not going to shy away from showing my love of Gundam 0080 and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. It's one of the reasons why I recently started to post on twitter and I have begun posting on PenguinTruth's blog.

The only anime series for the next season that I am really looking forward to is the new Super Robot Wars anime since the trailer really looked great, and the mechas look amazing, and considering how amazing the last series soundtrack was I can't wait until Dark Knight comes on.

How the hell could you not remember Weiss Kreuss? Anime Jump's review of it was a thing of beauty.

The Mai-Hime anime had a great premise that was ruined by a horrific second half that had half the cast derailed, and the usage of a woman being turned into a slave by being raped.

I can't quite agree with this. You can't forget all the yuri shows like Strike Witches (and I'm saying this as someone who's written Strike Witches slash fanfic).

Having some experience with the Navy and loving the first segment. I will say you need to put a '-' between 'E' and '3' as that is a rate and should be expressed as such.

Also, this is just a nitpick, instead of "viewer discretion", should it not be "listener discretion". Just saying, it is one of the first things anybody hears when they tune-in. If this is some sarcastic joke that I am stupidly missing, please forgive me. And if there is a video link, will somebody please have mercy and forgiveness and provide that.

So are you talking about how certain shows shoe-horns yuri elements as a means of fanservice without actual relationship development?

Zac from a few shows back said he only hated the dub, it was Justin that said he hated the show.

The yuri part was really interesting to hear about because I don't know much about it. I may check out Maria Watch Over Us one day.

Give Erica Friedman her own AnnCast (w/ Justin). She was passionate, informed and engaging.

What a time for Justin to not be on ANNCast we could have gotten the line "Your'e slaughtering my baby!" as Justin goes on a 5 minute rant about how much Hetalia sucks.

Whenever I decided to put on an episode of 00, I would always be sure to take off my technical realism cap. Realistic depiction of military protocol and operational detail may not be vital to the direction of the series, but it would certainly be all the more engrossing for it, as would other shows that feature a preponderance of military action--at least for somebody like me who cares about that kind of thing.

Ironically, the only anime I've seen that gives a damn about military realism is Flag. There's a production team that did some homework.

Nice. Laughing

Erica was a great guest, and the brief history she provided for the Yuri (and Yaoi) genre was revelatory for me.

However--without seeking to undermine the validity (literary, visceral or otherwise) of existing Yuri, Yaoi, and LGBT works in general--the question that remains for me is: do these works require their own distinct genre? Obviously the answer at present is that LGBT literature of any kind, let alone manga, requires a unique identity as protection against culture(s) which have yet to fully integrate the sexual/social realities associated with it... But what about twenty, thirty years from now, or however long normalization takes (one hopes a conclusion is arrived at sooner rather than later)? When LGBT behavior becomes normative, doesn't the body of literature representing it cease to possess intrinsically unique genre traits (given that said traits only concern--as far as I am aware--the presentation of traditionally marginalized and/or forbidden types of interpersonal relationships)? I would think so, given that interpersonal relationships (or their absence), even the taboo kind, are a transcendent feature of almost all literature.

I suppose the point will remain moot for some time though; Erica's railing against the "hardware gods" was pertinent to this. The proprietary nature of entire networks forged by the likes of Apple, these things ostensibly designed to share information, and the general acceptance thereof, baffles me almost as much as the inversely proportionate relationship between the size of the audience of anime/manga and potential consumers thereof. The viability of both trends in the long term remains ambiguous in my opinion.

The "geek negativity" Erica referred to complicates matters, even though it shouldn't. I'm sorry, but the association of service provision with reciprocal transaction is common sense, regardless of the kind of work that interests you. I was never under any illusion that artists somehow don't require compensation for their efforts in order to keep producing. Literally right before you suggested that we can start to remedy the situation by telling people to "go fudge themselves," I was thinking it to myself. It's all the more important as publishing industries migrate to digital distribution, because as Erica said it's still an economically hostile proposition. I was reading an article in the WSJ a couple days ago that detailed margins on digital property for authors and publishers, and they're kind of grim at the moment.

And hey, what's this about loud, obnoxious people not getting anywhere in real life? Look at the Tea Party, those reactionaries of the most basic kind. Razz Oh and the GOP.

Add: Oh nice, glad I'm not the only one interested in Shikabane Hime who hasn't seen all of it (or any of it basically...watched the first two episodes via fansubs, and I'm just loading up on the DVDs now).

--And here I was just thinking about getting someone an iPad for "the holiday". I guess I'm going to have to re-think that now. Is Apple even restricting certain content from legal streaming sites like Crunchyroll? Do they restrict shows that have LBGT content from the streaming sites that have apps for Apple products? --anyone?

I loved Erica's segment, and will echo the above sentiments that she would be and excellent guest host for future shows.

OTOH, Jon and Scott need to stick to their own blog. I found much of their commentary incredibly immature (and somewhat offensive). I know that they probably feel they get publicity from their repeat appearances on ANNcast, but this show's performance convinced me to avoid their website. Sorry.

Personally I'm waiting for the day when people start acting on the internet like they do in real life. Long wait I know, but maybe when we've all had our chip ID implants, etc, internet personal accountability will become a reality.

As others have said, good to hear Erica on the podcast. Please do get her on as a guest again in the future!

Good to hear from Daniella too; I always find it interesting to hear personal tales from people at all levels of the industry. Helps makes the ties between the fans and industry just a little stronger.

First off, I love ANNCast. I subscribe via podcast and listen to it while plugging away at work and it actually led me to finally register for the site rather then just hover and read posts.

I'd say FMA had some pretty solid military protocols, respect, greetings, surprised that wasn't brought up. Especially from a tight knit group like they were portraying embroiled in war. I spent 11 years in the military (USMC/USAF) and I watch a lot, it doesn't matter if its military or not. Your military guest sounded like a good kid, sounds like he's still in training though? I'd say we (my friends in the military that watched anime) gravitated more towards Shonen/Seinen naturally. Side note, I've never had any anime taken from me ever and being overseas from time to time you can get TONS of good (localized) like he mentioned.

Sorry, I have to say I have not heard about Apple rejecting any LGBT stuff on an iPad. Then again I don't go looking for it. However, I am not sure what she's referring to. The comic/manga/anime apps? If so the apps go through a very rigorous process for validation, try appealing the process result/verification? Crunchyroll streams just fine, if there is a problem just push the license you want through an app already validated? <shrug>

I absolutely LOVE my iPad for streaming all sorts of content. If you have such a problem then just get Air Video, toss all your shit on your PC/Mac, set up your server (super easy to setup) and voila you can look at anything you want (that you downloaded on your PC/Mac). Wow... that was such a hard work around. Instead let's bitch about someone who made a product, that you don't have to purchase btw, saying "they shouldn't be making decisions for me". You're right, they shouldn't, don't purchase their product - case closed.

tuxedocat, I have an iPad and I have yet to have a problem with any content but as I said above I didn't go looking for any Yuri/Yaoi stuff on any app or streaming anime site/app. For manga reading brilliant. For anime streaming brilliant. I didn't go for the 3G since I mostly use it at WiFi spots and I love it.

As for people acting fools in public, Otakon this year was the worst for people acting like idiots. Almost makes me not want to come to Otakon anymore. Too many people, too many people acting like fools, too many bad animes being selected for viewing, no real push for anything good for the fall season, dealers room was almost at cost for everything, and I missed out on purchasing a Valk Chronicles artbook, argh! I took my g/f so she could get a taste of the anime culture/fandom and I was flat out embarrassed. Otakon, step up your game like you step up your ticket prices. (what happened to one day passes btw?)

As for Hetalia, whew it was just bad I thought it really sucked. Sorry. I absolutely hated it. I gave it a chance at Otakon and even after the fire alarm I went back to sit and give it an honest shot and it was horrible. I saw all the cosplay folks running around so figured, hey this might not be too bad if they have so many cosplay fans, was I wrong... the dub is horrible, absolutely atrocious. In the past 5-6 years of going to Otakon it was the first time I had walked out of an anime presentation EVER. No, I wasn't annoyed that day about the fire alarm, I was actually in a great mood being at Otakon and having a good old time but Hetalia was just bad, bad, bad. (Pasta! seriously?) Even my good friend who is WAY more into anime and manga than myself wanted to walk out of the Hetalia premiere.

Keep up the great work ANNCast, there are A LOT of folks that listen to you that might not be posting here, be on podcast subs or post reviews about you both. I have to say you all are very much in line with my tastes and my views and I really appreciate your podcast very much.

Cheers,

Another great podcast as always.

Military in Anime:

I know some things about the military, but not serving first hand a lot of I can't relate and get mad about since I never served.

Yuri:

I have never really gotten into Yuri, but I would like to get more into that genre.

Fall 2010:

I know I will check out the moe shows since I'm into that stuff, but I probably won't follow a lot this season, mainly due to time constraints and I want to get my DVD back log taken care of.

Here is what I will at least give a shot:

MM
My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute
Panty and Stocking

There will probably be some others that I will probably check out, but I will wait until the fall preview comes out.

The reaction I had when I first saw the line up for this season was the same. It is a wasteland. I'm tempting to go back and watch Index because the second season is one of the only show I'm remotely interested in that I've heard talked about passionately. That and Bakuman. (But I hate to go and watch it now, after Funi has licensed it) While Panty and Stockimg looks interesting and is from Gainax the style alone may chance fans away. The Japanese art style is what attracts many American fans to anime in the first place and while Gainax is experimenting probably to expand their audience, anime fans may just ignore it.

I'm praying some of these dull looking shows offer a little more than their summeries and trailers have shown, if not I'm going to be making a big hit in my DVD backlog as well.
