I thought the full length yaoi episode was hilarious! Laughing

Even those season 2 was missing some of the charms from season 1, I am still hoping for the manga to be animated fully.

Hear hear!

The added fanservice was definetily a minus, but other than that I enjoyed this season a lot more than the first, because it took more liberties with the source material and expanded upon many of the scenes (though of course, like the review noted, it's not always a good thing...). Things such as Ogiue's fantasies or Tanaka and Ohno's courtship were much more brief in the manga. It was a little weird that they completely left out Sasahara's little sister though, despite her becoming a more prominent character in the manga.

And yeah, I really hope that they make a third season too.

I just keep on thinking "if they could just merge elements from both seasons, then we have a Genshiken anime we would like." Season 1 was my least favorite but the animation quality was better (although a bit boring) and dialogue seemed to carry itself better asides from the akward pauses in some parts. Season 2 on the other did what I was hoping it would do during some of the rants and fantasies by actually drawing them out. But it just wasn't quite right when watching them. Maybe too long of a fantasy sequence? Too many attempts on parody drops? I did like Madarame's Gundam rant in the first episode with the visuals though. The yaoi fantasy was hilarious but was a bit of a TMI situation for me. But on subsequent viewings, it got funnier. And I'll admit it. I liked the Oguie fantasy.

I also thought it was weird they wrote out Sasahara's sister like that too and couldn't get over the notation that it was probably because of budget. Her character added to the group and fit well in the manga, I felt. Would love to see them finish the last 3 volumes in the future but its really a series I think needs a bit of love from the animation and writers to do well. Both seasons seem to have one or the other.

Maybe we should have Gainax do the next season. Their otakus. But then we might get more ero scenes too....not that I'd mind...

Kinji Yoshimoto! Damn you!

I say that because his certain style and tastes has been littered into season 2. The parts you mentioned like that "jiggle cosplay part" and maybe he's responsible for the "sudo hentai Ogiue." But it expected with THAT guy at the helm.

Plastic Little, Queens Blade, Genshiken. One of these things SHOULDN'T be like the others!

Although, I do like the touch of extrapolating some scene and situations from the manga and playing it straight for others. A case of the former point is The Yaoi Episode and The OhnoxTanaka episode. Plus, he gave Kuchii more screen time with is a hit and miss.

I keep thinking how the one and a half English episodes could have been handled better, and the only answer I can come up with is: Switch to the subs. They just did not work at all in English, though the bad English on the sub track was really not better, at least the jokes worked.
Overall, I liked Genshiken 2 a lot, despite its departure from the first series. I felt I got to know a truer representation of the characters.

This disc joins my small list of stuff better to watched sub (if a dub is available): Strawberry Marshmallow, Fantastic Children, and now Genshiken 2 disc 3.

Is a third series even possible? They've adapted almost the whole manga between the two series and the OVA.

I thought the last two or so volumes were pretty bad, so it suits me.

Well, like you said, there's still two volumes (and some of seventh) to go, so they should have enough material for a third twelve episode season, especially if they added some original content again (but please, I really don't need to see Sasahara and Ogiue getting it on).

Thanks, now that explains a lot.

Agreed. While I haven't finished this particular series, that episode was a striking highlight and a clever way of adapting the manga. Her manga was a focal point at that time in it, and actually seeing how far she goes made it all the more hilarious, especially given how wrong the characters were to reality. I'm no fan of yaoi either. It's kind of sad to see it mentioned here as a downpoint solely due to it's sexual focus, particularly since it was played for laughs, but to each their own I guess.

The manga itself sort of slips into it's own foibles as it attempts to shift from comedy to more realistic slice of life, so it's no real surprise that the anime suffers at the same point.
