Believe it or not, the third mission (the Buddha Aliens) really ends on a high note, and the series really does step up afterward. Even if it is just mostly blood and boobs.

Gantz is not a dark philosophical sci-fi masterpiece; it's just a bunch of crazy people acting out

Yes, why don't people get this?
I do find Gantz entertaining though. I've never been a huge fan of the manga but it's nice to see that the Author is trying to get it together.

TBH, this review is the first time I've ever heard anyone even claims this. Everyone I've heard online just calls Gantz a good series, no one goes on about how "deep" it is or anything. So I was a bit surprised to hear Carlo mention it.

Character development won't be an issue for Kurono at least in time though. And I wouldn't agree this is exactly where the series is meant to be, considering the arcs past where the anime cut off feature more likable and developed characters, is less devoted to "mission-of-the-week" plot, and the mysteries and plot get more intriguing.

You thought so? The end of that arc annoyed me so much I stopped reading.

Hiroya Oku still can't draw.
Huh. I haven't gotten #5 yet, but... seriously? D+? Hiroya Oku can't draw? It might not be the most detailed manga out there, but D+ and saying Hiroya Oku can't draw seems a bit too over the top.

impossible.

i donno if you realized this yet but it seems to me that this person who does the reviews is one person / people sharing the same mindset or dare i say it

WOMEN LOL (that chicks on animes column makes me giggle)

women would probably hate this manga. it contains too many things men would enjoy and women would hate.

to this reviewer who of course has her own bias which is the cause of her claiming this mangaka cannot draw, the boobage was probably a bad note. a really bad one since ecchi or boobs does not bode well with the wimmenz. and from there i guess she just lost patience with everything else and decided to disregard this manga as meh.

wimmenz will tend to undervalue something as soon as too much ecchi or boobage shows up, and i guess generally that's true.

ecchi/booby anime/mangas usually do suck. some of them are funny or just plain fun to watch for other reasons rather than the boobs though. but seriously, the softcore porn going on in ikkitousen made me nothing to nippah about Neutral, even if i'm a guy. just go watch the more orientated in that direction anime, dont flash the pantsu when it's unnecessary.

but i guess i'll never get that part of moe =/. failing as a weeaboo sigh.

makes me curious about what this reviewer would say about k-on, or kannagi, because it's not necessarily ecchi to the max or boobies everywhere.

it's just an otaku moe fest anime, and if she complained about the anatomy then or say the guy cant draw, then she'd just be bashing, since clearly k-on is not trying to follow anatomy anyway. i donno about oya though, seems like he's trying, so i guess it's ok?

tl;dr in anything you read expect there to be bias, especially in "reviews" of anything. this is a good example of it. if a male were to review gantz he'd probably type his review in a much more positive tone recommending the manga, but oops for some reason a woman reviewed the manga.

why did she decide to do that? i donno, probably she didn't even wanna read the manga in the first place, maybe it's her job hahaha. i'm sure if she could she would have avoided gantz like the plague.

She's a he.

And with your very first effort, you've managed to produce what just might be the stupidest post I've ever read on these boards. Congratulations.

I enjoy Gantz, but would never say it's much more than a blood-and-boob fest. I feel the series gets better as it goes on; Kurono actually goes through some character development, and my favorite characters start to appear a bit later around volume 10. The first sets of characters really don't stick around as long and don't really have much to them (other than Kato and the two Keis). Gantz does have some meaning in it, but it's not something that prevails over everything else. It's just kinda there, the characters and start thinking about it once in awhile, though it's brought up more later on. Maybe it's just me, but I actually enjoy Gantz's artwork. I believe it improves later on down the road, but even the first few volumes are (in my opinion) nice. But, to each their own.

And, uh, this is all coming from a female reader, by the way. Not sure how many of us actually read this, but apparently there is at least one Very Happy

Yeah, I think that grade is way too exagerrated. Is that grade based on comparing it to other manga that attempt a more realistic style? I'm more used to anime/manga with a more "typical" cartoonish style, and compared to those GANTZ looks pretty good. One of the things I like about GANTZ is I can actually tell what's going on in the action scenes; with a lot of manga the action scenes are so detailed and cluttered that it takes me a long time to figure out what's actually happening.

Who the hell thinks Oku can't draw? Well, first off for most of it he doesn't draw. It's all done in CG computer modeling. That's why the backgrounds look so real and the characters are positioned kind of stiffly. And even the parts that are drawn are very well done. Kurono's character design (around volume 9 or 10) is one of my favorite pieces of manga artwork.

I agree, I do like the ending of the arc in the Buddhist temple. Mainly because spoiler[all of the really annoying pointless characters who kept dragging the series down into boring un-drama were killed.]

This is one of the worst posts I've seen on the entire Internet. And I've seen a ton of horrible posts.

okay... can't get behind this one. Confused in fact, i think the only thing that keeps Gantz from being generic is the artwork. for such large scale battles, the attention to detail is amazing. i've only seen this done better in Berserk.

Too bad reviews mostly mean nothing. Still gonna support this release. I'd rather buy Gantz over [insert popular otaku title here].

Carlo is definitely a female name. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, as a woman, I can say that ecchi and boobage are a staple of some of my favorite series (many of which are shounen and seinen). I suspect you're a troll, though, so I don't know if there's any point arguing against insane troll logic.

agreed, the comment about his art seems to come out of left field, as i have never noticed any of the complaints the reviewer has on the series. I do agree on some of the plot elements, GANTZ is sort of likea R rated action movie, tits, action, and 0 plot or character development(although, this does get better later), in fact this is the only thing keeping the manga from reaching berserk levels of awesomeness
