Good to know this volume gets the best of both worlds. Hopefully I'll get around to reading it later this week.

That is one of the worst covers I have seen for a manga in quite some time. Even a generic run of the mill shounen cover mops the floor with that ;__;

Heh, I at least agree with Carlo this time on the climax in this volume. It's beautiful.

Really hope that Parasyte is doing well for Del Rey.

Yes, in fact, why not put clichéd bishoujo girls on the cover, reaching out to metaphorically invite otaku in to watch/read their story! We have no need for something unique and fittingly grotesque!

I probably would like Parasyte more, if it didn't waste my time examining human vs animal behavior, and just gave me some action. I just don't feel like seeing the characters sit around and wait to be chased down, I guess. But I'm hoping they up the ante in the next two volumes.

That wasn't where I was really going; I'm just saying the art is incredibly bad... it could have been at least more visually appealing in that aspect. They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but admittedly, covers for manga are sometimes the initial drawing factor. If I were to randomly pick this up from the bookstore, I would probably be initially drawn away from it, though instinct tells me to at least give things a chance.

Regardless, that's just my feel. I'm not saying make it cliche, but that cover is ugly and there's no denying that.

I like that Iwaaki actually gives humanity to his side characters*, and also doesn't try to give a constant presence of tension. So many stories attempt that, and very few of them actually succeed -- building tension through the potential action is far more effective and underapperciated than simple action.

*As much as they can be considered side characters, as main characters aren't high in number for this series.

Aesthetically bad would obviously depend on the person, but it's not bad on a technical level. Besides, it interests people who would generally go for these kind of stories. I also doubt that a lot of people interested in Parasyte would pull off a higher number volume compared to one (which has an effective cover in its simplicity and distinctiveness).

Hellkorn: Normally, I'd agree with you. But they're discussing philosophical norms while people are being eaten. I mean, it hurts the urgency of the situation.

I sort of agree. I can kind of understand where you're coming from, but then again the talking heads-to-violent gore disconnect in something like Gantz was WAY more distracting (ridiculous to the point of laughter, really), IMO. It makes Parasyte seem like the height of logical action/talking balance in comparison.

I'm definitely looking forward to more excitement and less sitting around as the series reaches its climax, though.
