So I see New Answerman is bashing live-action Dragon Ball BEFORE IT'S EVEN OUT...seriously, why do people do this?
Still no flakes? I might just send in a flake next week. Kiddy Grade season 2: I've never even seen anything about it beyond YouTube comments speculating on it. |

But...whatever. Moving on. Keanu Reeves as Spike....hmmmm... ... ... I hope I got my well-dictated point across.... |

Aw! i missed the fav soundtrack question !
Anyway, my favs are defintely Escaflowne and Honey and Clover. Honey and Clover's insert songs esp. get you so into the moment of the show (and made me cry several times), and the other accompanying music was supurb at setting the mood. Escaflowne's soundtrack was exceptional, and I still listen to it occasionally (although I haven't in a while. Should pull that out !) |

That "25th of May" has been there since 2007. It was the release date of the pilot DVD, and the official website had not been updated since June 27, 2008. |

Just gonna post the response I emailed. Because I love to share good music:
To choose just one favorite anime soundtrack is impossible for me. I'm obsessive about background music and it's what I listen to 90% of the time. I'm the sort of person who can listen to a song and be taken back to "that scene" in every sense. Okay, so to get an obvious choice out of the way - Yoko Kanno. I love EVERYTHING she does. Not many people dislike her; she has an amazing range and knows how to set any scene to music. I have a couple of favorites that she composed that most anime fans probably haven't actually listened to. First, Please Save My Earth's soundtracks... sheer beauty! Kanno didn't compose all of the tracks, but most of the music is hers. Anyone who hasn't seen the PSME OAV is missing out on a very touching anime. Kanno's songs for PSME are very simple and sincere. You can really sense the bittersweet lives of the lunar scientists through her melodies. Also, the songs sung by Mokuren are incredibly beautiful. The ED theme "Toki no Kioku" is always tear-inducing. Other lesser-known soundtracks of hers are the two OSTs for Brain Power'd. I haven't even watched the series (since I've been told it's rather bad), but the soundtrack is so uplifting,... yet it also carries a nice range of somber songs that all manage to fit together. Arjuna's OSTs are also brilliant. Arjuna has the same sort of powerful simplicity that PSME's music has. Kanno shows that you don't have to use a full orchestra to carry a scene with these OSTs. For non-Kanno OSTs, I still have many favorites left. Noein's two OSTs are wonderful. The composer is Nanase Hikaru, and she has an interesting list of series she's composed for... interesting in that most of the titles are mahou shoujo or comedy. Despite that, she's probably best known for her gothic cathedral-esque music in Angel Sanctuary. Noein has a similar dark gothic feel to the music, but only for part of the soundtrack. She balances well the themes of sadness that come from Lacryma and the happy, childish themes for Haruka and her friends. Karasu's theme is so beautiful that I find it hard to describe it in detail. There's a grand, yet haunting, feeling that goes along with this song and many others on the OSTs. Also, the OP of Noein, "Idea", is an amazing opening. It starts slow and somber and then it pounces on you like a big goofy dog. Hana Yori Dango Variations is an amazing symphonic OST. There are some pre-existing classical themes that were used on the soundtrack, but the original songs blend in beautifully with them. Doumyouji's compilation song is especially wonderful. ALL of his themes, one for every insane emotion he has within the 51 episode tv series, are blended together into a long orchestra piece. All of the Utena OSTs. ALL OF THEM. Industrial duel themes and j-pop and sophisticated violin pieces and porno-worthy tunes and gregorian chants all put together into one series. Hurray for J. A. Seazer. While I can keep going forever with this list, I'll end with one of my top favorites: Gankutsuou. The soundtrack for Gankutsuou is a bit unique in that it was composed by a foreigner: Jean-Jacques Burnel. I can forgive him for singing the OP so out-of-key, because his compositions are stunning. First there's the powerful and techno-licious "Anger" and "MONTE CRISTO". "MONTE CRISTO" starts out with a beautiful female solo from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" (well known as the Diva's song in "The Fifth Element") then the song gains momentum, a strong male singer, and heavy percussion. Amidst the heavy techno, there's light piano pieces like "Shounen no Hi". It is simple but poignant. "mercedes" is a beautifully simple song as well. But wait, there's even more variety; even a campy French waltz theme is included in this soundtrack. And of course there's the simple, bittersweet OP "WE WERE LOVERS" and the ever rage-filled ED "Your won't see me coming." Every theme fits perfectly into the unique world of the anime Gankutsuou. Honorable mentions go to Juuni Kokki's OSTs, Rurouni Kenshin's Premium Collection, and End of Evangelion (a great OST by itself, but "Komm Susser Tod" just makes it brilliant) |

Another definite Anime-to-Live-Action movie to put on your list: BLOOD: The Last Vampire.
The last I heard... it is pretty well completed. It just needs to pick a premiere date. CT |

To be fair to Speed Racer, it's everything a movie about Speed Racer should be. I think reviewers, expecting something else, poisoned the movie-going public with their harsh reviews. Did anyone remember that Speed Racer was just sort of a lame, unremarkable cartoon to begin? If anything, the movie improved it in some ways.
I still can't believe that a forty four year old man is going to be playing a twenty-seven year old man in the Cowboy Bebop live-action movie. I mean, it's bad enough Keanu can't act, but they want him to play a guy almost twenty years his junior? I have a feeling they're not going to even bother doing the character right if they can't even get a detail like that right. I'm glad somebody brought up the soundtrack to Tenchi Muyo!. It may have been a bit synthesizer-heavy, but the piano and string pieces were beautiful. I especially enjoy the movie soundtracks, with the first movie's music composed by Christopher Franke of Tangerine Dream and the third movie's soundtrack being a valentine to Chopin (I actually own that one). Maybe I should take a picture of my signed Cowboy Bebop movie poster for the next installment of Answerfans. Shinchiro Watanabe, Toshihiro Kawamoto, and Yoko Kanno all signed it at the long dead Big Apple Anime Fest, back in 2002. Live action Akira? Gods no, I hated the animated version.
It's interesting to see the new Answerman is such a fan of it. I rather disliked it as I felt it was way too rushed (I'm sure the manga is better, since the movie was based on a series, but I didn't care enough about the whole thing in general to give it a second chance) As for Advent Children beating out Akira in Anime awards? I have to say I found Advent Children to be much more entertaining, but I do agree with Brian here. "Best movie"? Not quite... |

My current favorite soundtrack: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann :D
Seriously!!! From the "ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWAH" of Rap wa Kan no Tamashii da! to the crazy dramatic opera of "Libera me" from hell, this soundtrack covers sooo much ground. I adore the OP and EDs, as well as the insert songs (Nakagawa Shouko's Happily Ever After always gets me a little teared up ;A;). Plus, there's nothing like a little Nikopol to get you pumped for just about anything X3 I need to send a pet pic... Tortoise owners, represent!!! |

Dude, have you seen the promo stuff for the Dragon Ball movie?? Unless all the promo photos, posters, and trailer are a clever ruse by the filmmakers to hide their brilliance until the release date, I think Brian's skepticism is more than justified. It'll be a freakin' miracle if it doesn't cause audiences to bleed from the eyes and nose. I'm sorry I missed out on the soundtrack question, though I'm glad the one guy mentioned BECK. I don't think I've ever listened to any one soundtrack as many times as I have that one. The show "Night Head Genesis" had some really pretty music, too, but as far as I can tell, there isn't a cd available. |

Would it be at all possible for Brian to use one of his brilliant cartoons for the new answerman logo? Howl was great and all, but its a new era.

Aww forgot to write in an answer to hey answerfans
Well what I would have sent is the amazing ochestral soundtracks of Howl's Moving Castle (gotta love that merry go round of life piece, it's simply beautiful), and for an anime series Emma a Victorian Romance (silhouette of a breeze is one of my favorites). Highly orchestrated soundtracks are simply beautiful and pleasing to my ears, it's always sad when a series overuses synthesized pieces. In response to the column, in any award ceremony where yoko kano doesn't win for best composer of soundtrack for an animated series, she was robbed plain and simple. There's no one, NO ONE, who can compose better soundtracks than yoko kano and most certainly not any composer from some abysmal show as duck dodgers I need to send in an answer for next week. Gotta get that digital camera in place too |

I'm just happy that Theron pointed out .hack//SIGN's awesome soundtrack. While I was hoping for it along with Noir (which also has amazing music by Kajiura), it's good to see that Yuki Kajiura wasn't completely snubbed.

Maybe because it looks like shit? I've seen the trailer several times and I still have to pick my jaw up every time so that I don't accidentally inhale my tears of laughter. It's going to be absolutely retarded. I'm going to see it high, drunk, drunk and high, normally, with friends, drunk and high with friends, and buy 10 copies when the DVD comes out. Dragonball Evolution will suck (tremendously) but I will love it and staple it to my copy of Garzey's Wing to enjoy for eternity. |
