Go digging for cartoon boners someplace—anyplace!—else.

I've never been a huge fan of Casey reviews...but this line is pure gold.
That said...what posessed the publisher to choose such an awful title? Was it the original author's wish (as was the case with Kodomo no Jikan becoming Nymphet) or did someone seriously think it was a better title?

When I first saw the cover of US edition I though I made a mistake with its Encyclopedia entry (which has a very different title picture), but after comparing English and Japanese plot summaries I was sure they were the same. I wonder how Shiba got a wolf-like tail?

(Shibainu have short, curly tails, often yellow-brownish)

In this case, Taketora worries that Shiba is only interested in him because he reminds the pooch of his dearly departed grandfather.

Ah, that's an easy answer:

Did Taketora's grandfather engage in beastie with Shiba?

If yes, the worries are warranted.

HOW many BL series have this exact same plotline now?

Deux Press seem to be remarkably good at picking terrible titles for things they license, so it's probably their fault more than the creator's fault. Miyamoto Kano's 手をつないで、空を (Hand in Hand, Gazing up at the Sky) had a fairly reasonable title, and actually fit the manga quite well, but then Deux decided to call it 'Two of Hearts'. Kamuro Koreaki's 'Lovely Baby' had an awful title to start with, yet Deux somehow managed to make it even worse by renaming it 'Hanky Panky'.

OMG, Casey finally panned a BL GN!

Okay, unfair, I'm sure she's done that before, but I still feel she tends to give cliched series a free pass if they just happen to have a male romance. Please feel free to deluge me with articles proving me wrong, it would actually make me feel better.

Not that I'm surprised about a bad review here: this sounds utterly awful.

Aw, that's a shame. After reading President's Time and finding it utterly hilarious, I was kind of tempted to check this out despite my dislike of furries and having virtually no interest in the title otherwise.

Although, to be fair, the reason I enjoyed President's Time so much was solely because of the non romantic or man loving aspects, as the off beat characters and amusing shenanigans paired with it's awesomely absurd storyline made for a fun read. If you took out all the ridiculousness and just had the romance though, it probably would have really sucked, and that's what it sounds like Ruff Love essentially is. So generic BL cliches and people screwing their dogs- that's a pass for me.

Hahaha, with that in mind, you're probably right on the title's being Deux's fault. Ruff Love just sounds awful. Not that I'd ever read a manga like this, but a title like that would garner nothing in return. Too cheesy haha.

Clearly you people have not spent enough time on the internet.

Animal ears/tail =/= furry. Furry refers to a bipedal talking animal that still has its fur/claws/snout/etc. If it's human with animal ears/tail then it's just a kemonomimi.

I haven't actually read this (nor do I plan to), but from what I've seen this series contains more of the latter than the former. learn2fetish terminology.

perhaps the same that possessed Funimation to choose the awful title Rumbling Hearts for KimiNozo.

From what I've heard, that one wasn't Funimation's fault. Apparantly the Japanese company wanted to use the name Rumbling Hearts for the English release of the series.
But seriously...Ruff Love? Ugh.

I liked The President's Time, but the artwork was kind of messy and not really drawing me in. I've avoided Ruff Love, not for that reason, but because the whole anthropomorphic thing has never interested me. I read Man's Best Friend, which was sort of cute, but I was still not that into it. Takashima's style is a little too bland for my palatte (Wild Rock was also cute, but boring).

I wish ANN reviewed BL more often, and earlier. We get title reviews for anime up to weeks before their actual street date, but Ruff Love has been out for over a month now. As a BL fan, I keep up with releases as they come out, so I am often the first person I know who decided to take a chance on a title and by the time I see reviews of it online, I have already bought and read it myself. Of course, in this case I already decided this title wasn't my thing and this particular review simply reinforced my lack of desire to try it.

As for Deux picking bad titles for their licenses, it happens all the time (and not always because the English publisher chose poorly). They have equally good/more accurate title translations as well. Miyamoto's Lovers and Souls was a direct translation and while some prefer the "closer," Road of No Return, I Shall Never Return wasn't a "bad" choice. They're a newer publisher and they simply don't have that impressively sized of a catalogue yet to judge their overall ability to choose good title translations.

I saw it at Borders when I was there on Thursday night, so there's a good chance it is available wherever BL manga is sold.

Jeeze.
Would Casey PLEASE, PLEASE review one of Miyamoto Kano's excellent BL instead of the mediocre-to-wierd stuff that's been reviewed on ANN lately?

It's sort of a weird issue, though, as ANN officially does not review "pornography," though it does review BL, perhaps not on a regular basis, but at least at all. I'd love to see reviews of "better" series, too, or at least series I have had my eye on, but have been on the fence about. Miyamoto would be a solid choice (as her stories tend to avoid the "bizarre" and the "cliche"), but I already snatch up her stuff when it comes out. It would be nice if ANN had a more "dedicated" reviewer for the genre as a whole. I know Casey does them, but only in-between other sorts of reviews (and it would just be cruel to ask poor Carlo to do it for RTO).
