The file may go more into depth, but I can't read it as it won't load now.

What I did read on the blog however made me wonder: It said Japan thinks 10,000 dvds sold is good. What is America's goal? 2k?

Goal? Probably around 20k for your average series. You have to remember they pay about 2½ times more than we do in Japan. Or rather about 2½ times more than we used to pay. It's probably a lot more than that now. Course nowadays R1 probably considers 10k a break away smash hit!

Agreed, but seeing as it took this long to get it published in English, that's not surprising. It's only good for historic reference now as those figures must surely have dropped by now, also what would be more interesting would be to see how that compared with the world market, or even just NA.

Although the report is old and its translation is flawed, at least someone tried to give western audience a glimpse of real Japanese media business that Japanese animation industry depends on. I could be wrong, but aren't NA fans complain everything about the Japanese side of the industry almost purely on speculations? Do western fans know how Japanese animation companies finance their production in first place? No, we're just too busy arguing about North American side of the business and barely pay attention to the other side. To some, anime magically appears from a wonderful land of Rising Sun and every artists live happily ever after. If that's true, I'll just quit my day job and move to Japan.
Puns aside, either we could credit this blogger for his effort or post some relevant information that counters his claim.

Well this fan is still waiting for the Japanese to get off their collective rear ends and release shit already so I can buy them legitimately and make them think that some US fans want to buy their shit.

Unfortunately, seeing that Japan thinks of us as the ultimate cash cows and release what they think will sell here, i'm not surprised they have high hopes of selling and then fail miserably because of it.

(Yes, Youtube deleted another round of BBC stuff and what the BBC replaced it with is utter rubbish.)

Of course all gratitude is greatly given, by me at the least. But for anyone who's been into this art in some depth apart from just ripping it off for their own selfish consumption, this should be no surprise as those years up to 2007 are considered good years for the anime and manga industry, especially in Japan as well as the world. If it could be put on a graph it would be the rising trend up the scale. We have to keep in mind though that it is only very recently that most, if not all the companies creating, and publishing anime, and manga, have become that aware of the popularity of their product outside of Japan. Up until then they have only been concentrating solely on their own market so have never felt the need to make such information available to anyone else not Japanese based. However anyone who has visited the country and were the least bit observant would discover just how popular anime and manga is there, without knowing those figures.
