The only Pokemon movies I've really enjoyed were Mewtwo Strikes Back, Revelation Lugia, and the Latios and Latias one. Others have ranged from poor to decent. This one was decent, but I'm tired of nearly all the movies being just another fight between the "legendary" Pokemon with Ash and friends just standing around, watching. It's bad enough Jessie, James, and Meowth never do anything of value in the movies (or really, in the series either, anymore). Also, far be it for me to praise 4Kids, but their dubbing of the Pokemon series is a lot better than the newer one.

I managed to get a free Darkrai from Toys 'R Us out of this, though.

The only surprise that The Rise of Darkrai holds is that, after all these years, they're still able to scrape together enough funding to make Pokémon films.

No, that, I'm not surprised about. "Enough funding?" Pokemon is not a money-making machine for nothing; it does not top the Japanese box offices for nothing. Little kids whining to their parents DEFINITELY make these guys "enough funding."

I will say that the animation in the Pokemon movies recently is always a treat. I love that the staff goes on location all around the world for their settings and brings back such richness in the settings. The Pokemon movies (more recently) are some of the best eye-candy I can find.

Being a Pokemon fan, I find this a decent movie.
My favorite Pokemon movie would still have to be the second one, The Power of One, with Lugia. Smile

Edit: By the way, there's always the 11th Movie, coming out on July 19th in Japan... -Shot- Laughing

I suggest ignore this movie as because the new cast sucks compared to the original dub cast. Voice recasting in anime has been known to controversial.

It doesn't mean it has to be controversial. I think all the new ones are great. Ash's new voice is the only real problem I have.

Just as unlikely to have any positive effects; parents will be able to tolerate, but probably not enjoy, the film.

After the 90's, that show went down the hill. I haven't watched that show or seen the movies in years, but I remember that the cast was much better.

What will 4kids ruin next I wonder?

I've started to watch Pokemon again for the first time in years, but only because of Dawn/Hikari.... >_>

I saw this review and I got a bit nostalgic. I can't enjoy this franchise anymore. Simply can't. The new dub killed it for me, and I can never like it. I turn the show on and I might even find what they're doing interesting, and yet I can't enjoy it because Ash opens his mouth and sounds horrible, even now.

I remember reading about this movie on a pokemon fan site, and the idea of it seems interesting, but I can't enjoy the concept.

*sigh* Sad

Completely agree. I hate 4Kids, especially for what they did to One Piece, and while they did change some of the material for Pokemon, it was still relatively the same show, and the VAs actually put some effort into the roles. Also, I confess to loving the original 4Kids theme song, anytime they play it on the overhead stereo (I work at Toys R Us), I find myself silently singing, "it's you and me.....I know it's my destiny...." Embarassed

Strangely how various members on various threads have expressed discussed with how 4Kids handled their various shows and yet various members (like me) prefer the 4Kids dub to the Pokemon USA dub. Heck, I actually do enjoy seeing the edits somewhat because they are so ridiculous. Maddie Blaustein, the main 4KIDS Meowth voice, still is with 4Kids even though she (like Jan Frazier, both used to be men. Yep, Meowth used to be voiced by a tranny) has heard of their criticism.

Just try watchin' Japanese version if you think the English version sucks.

-sigh- There's always bound to be a PUSA vs 4kids argument nowadays.

I thought this movie was decent too, though I liked the Lucario one better. The Japanese version to me was more entertaining than the English version. PUSA also cut out Sarah Brightman's song..which was entirely in ENGLISH. So blah. DX

And wow Spanish subtitles. xD

Sarah Natochenny is pretty bad as Ash. She doesn't have any emotion in her performance whatsoever. However, the rest of the new cast has grown on me to at least a tolerable level, so I can still somewhat enjoy the show and movies.

I plan to watch this movie pretty soon (bought it, but haven't watched it yet), since I've heard it's a pretty good movie, as far as Pokémon films go.

So...no extras? Was there no Pikachu mini-movie this year or did PUSA not dub it?

There was a Pikachu mini-movie out in Japan last year, but I'm guessing they didn't add it onto the DUB DVD.

I thought that this was the best movie in the Pokemon franchise. It was much better than I thought it would be and they made good use of the higher budget (given it was an anniversary film). Also gotta enjoy the nods to Time Stranger (both directed by the same person). The dub held up well, too (though the less said about the dub songs, the better).

I still have a great deal of nostalgia for the original series, though I petered out watching it sometime soon after the Orange Islands. (God, I hate you, Tracy...) From the very little I've heard of the new voice cast, I can see why they've garnered so much derision. I'd still be up for rewatching the original movie for a good case of the warm-n-fuzzies, though.
