I guess I'm pretty lucky because I faced little to no ridicule for my hobby. My parents and little sister may have given me a little bit of crap, but that's about it. I wore anime shirts at school quite a bit and no one cared. I guess everyone at my school was polite or something. One guy saw my anime shirt and told me all anime was just a bunch of guys with superpowers fighting, "But it's ok if you like it, I'm just saying I don't like it." He said. Wow. I guess I'm a lucky one.

Can I throw this in: and Tokyopop? Seriously, some of these starry-eyed wannabe kids with stupid ideas think they can become mangaka because they see OTHER starry-eyed wannabe kids with stupid ideas ACTUALLY GET PUBLISHED in a certain annual 4-letter-acronym comic anthology or a certain 3-letter-acronym line of graphic novels.

In other words, it's actually not impossible in the real world-- unless you don't consider America a part of that.

i agree with Zach, but you are right. political slander has no place on a site like this.

Oh come on. It's not "slander" and nobody cares what I think about politics. It was a joke, get over it. Yeesh.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't been ridiculed too much, but then again, I'm not exactly advertising the fact that I like anime. I've been a fan since I was in eighth grade and managed to hide this fact from the general public until I was a junior. And then I met some people I could hang out with who had similar interests, and it was all good...

But even now, in my college years, I don't go around telling people I like anime. Sure, my computer usually has an anime background on it and you could probably figure out I like "some of them Japanese cartoons", but I'm not the type to go around wearing the badge of otaku-dom on my chest.

I am a collector of anime DVDs, especially when I'm waiting for my Lucky Star LE DVD to come in with the shirt, CD goodies, box and the DVD itself. My friend tells me I should just download stuff to save money but that is not the point as to why I would buy them. I also agree with Zac about the part where with DVDs you can play them on your TV. And not have to worry about bad quality videos at times on Youtube. Not to say that the site is bad, but there are better videos and places you can watch anime, especially on the TV.

I think ISPs that limit bandwidth (like mine) are going to be the true hinderance to digital downloads of anything en masse. People are already concerned about clogging the information superhighway without downloading all our TV, music and moies.

It's not slander or libel (which would've been the more correct term), but it doesn't really matter because we're on teh internets!!1! Razz

I was glad that what GONZO is doing was mentioned in the first response. Especially the "they're at least trying something new" part. Seriously, it feels like only the same companies are doing anything about this issue. But I'm also glad to be around for this change, and for a reason that I cannot seem to explain.

I didn't bother to ask how they could possibly prefer the soulless, expository train wreck that is Akira over something that is actually well-told, like Evangelion

Switch those two around, and I'll agree.

Quote:
Eventually they'll learn that substituting the novelty of a (foreign) visual style for genuine emotional engagement with audiences doesn't work--as the industry has demonstrated with garbage like Advent Children and The Spirits Within before it.

Um, Advent Children was a hit, and the technology used in Spirits Within was selected for one of the Animatrix segments...

Since I have a secondary interest in video games, it was easy to talk about things he liked, but when I mentioned that my main interest was anime, he replied, "Wow. At least I'm not THAT geeky."

I guess he forgot that many video games feature anime-inspired characters. Rolling Eyes

Zerreth:
Quote:
What I always found unusual was that the people around me ridiculed me because I saw things that "weren't normal." Think of it this way. Try explaining the plot of Read or Die. It's about a girl named Yomiko Reedman who has the ability to control paper-- and cut. You see it immediately in their eyes. They lose interest. It sounds supernatural and thus "childish."

Just tell them that at least you didn't see that Transformers movie.

Megan: I think they're just making fun of you, because of the rebellious and disrespectful nature of their ages, not because they think anime fans are losers. Otherwise, they wouldn't be in on the joke. But I can relate, seeing as my letter which never got published talked about how a friend of mine turned on me, when they got their foot in the door of a nameless company.

Jason: I hope this makes you feel better. Cool

I've only recently started buying anime DVDs and I must say it's going to be a little hard for me to only watch legal streams or downloads when they don't have surround sound digital audio, plus I'm very interested in many of these new shows coming out on bluray, so yeah I understand that physical media isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

As for being ridiculed for being an anime fan I can't say it's ever happened to me, since I don't really advertise it outside of my house. I don't own any anime shirts and in my room all I have is a DBZ movie 12 wallscroll that my brother gave me and a super deformed GP01 Gundam model, and a lot of my family and friends are fans of anime as well. Well, there was this one time when a friend of mine saw that I watch anime from my myspace page and decided to send me a comment with an image of "real" porn, but I managed to brush him off and forget about it. The only real ridicule I face is from from friends that think the shows I like are all slow and boring crap, but I just argue back that all they like is the same shounen and harem crap, so the hate goes around.
