The idea of losing ANY of the Straw Hats IS EXTREMELY heartbreaking to me. Kazuki Yao got Franky to be created by Oda to keep using his voice...
If we lose him he will be the second Straw Hat with a permanent replacement...

This has been a long time coming sadly, smoking has absolutely destroyed Yao's voice.

That’s sad. I think we’re all being a bit premature about him dropping out of voicing Franky, but it’s weird to think about someone else voicing the character.

Not if you’re cognizant of the fact that new actors taking over old roles because the original actor died,retired, or screwed up is pretty common.

Man, this sucks. You could hear him really struggling with Franky at times over the past year or two; I read some Japanese speakers noting that at the worst of it a few of his lines were barely comprehensible. I have to think this will extend to Franky too, at least for the short-term. I hope that he's able to get treatment for whatever's going on.

The first was iirc Daisuke Gori who died by suicide shortly after voicing Jimbei in early 2010.

It's been obvious for years that he's losing his ability to voice the loud, bombastic Franky. Real shame, but I kind of wish they'd replaced him sooner. I love the man and I'll always respect the work he's done from the 70s until now, but at this point I think a decent soundalike will be much better than Yao's current voice.

I could hear him struggling in his performance recently so I'm not completely surprised...but it seems like they're not officially recasting him as Franky quite yet.

I know that Jimbei is a member but by that time the anime was in the Impel Down arc and Jimbei wouldn't become an official member until the Whole Cake Island arc.
I get your point, but I don't know if we should count this one as an example of Straw Hats being replaced given that Jimbei at the time, in both anime and manga, wasn't an official member of the Straw Hat pirates.

I don’t want to get too off topic but I can’t understand how you could make your livelihood with your voice and still smoke. I know of a couple of Seiyuu from the 70s and 80s that died early because of it.
