These guys seem like they're flying too close to the sun. Hyping it up with advance trailers on YouTube, even doing a Japanese version. They're just begging for a Cease and Desist letter.

Yeah they basically forced hakusensha's hand, even after they stayed quiet after the first teaser. I refuse to believe the fan studio weren't expecting this to happen.

Might be too easy. Anyway, you don't advertise like a fan project like this unless you've gotten permission to do so or your T's are crossed and your I's dotted. They were kind of asking for the IP holder to say something. |

This comes up fairly often with video games where some sort of fan project makes itself known with promotional materials, only to get a C&D and typically decide to close right before it releases. The question is always: Why announce it? If you quietly released it, sure, it might not have as much awareness, but once something hits the internet, it's impossible to completely remove it. I guess it is strange thinking to me to announce it. You have to assume the rights holders will do something when they become aware, so if you want your fan project to at least get out there, it needs to happen before it gets that attention. One of the things I've noticed is that some rights holders don't necessarily take action at the very first announcement. It happens closer to when the project was supposed to release, almost like they are letting them sink time and effort into it before rendering it futile. |

Oh, if anything, it's simple - some people are dumb in terms of knowledge of international copyright laws, especially when the same creators are literally put the Patreon to support the animated project for which they not had the approval with the rights holders. |

I knew from the beginning that it was not a good idea to do this without any authorization. I mean, I understand the enthusiasm and the love they into the project, but if it's not done in a legal and authorized way it was obvious that they were not going to get very far. Still, I hope that somehow the publisher and the animation studio can come to some agreement and continue with this properly.

You would think fan projects would have learned by now that paywalling or asking for money is like painting a giant target on your back that companies might be otherwise willing to overlook.

Aren't these the same people who promised a Attack on Titan alternative ending? I am sure they where supposed to have released it by now. |

This was bound to happen eventually. These people are really stupid, using intellectual property that isn't theirs and not creating a brand-new in house production but stealing materials from pervious adaptations of berserk and splicing them together with poor quality flash animation. Though as long as they are not profitting off of it, then I don't think it violates copyright laws but the fact of their matter is, is they are creating this production for the consumers and have the gall to request donations which makes it a property with menetary gain. They really painted a mark on their back doing that. What did you think was going to happen?
Well honestly the fan project looks decent but its nothing like what we are requesting for a professional adaptation and I really hope like studio Mappa takes on berserk sometime. Its sad that we don't have a modern adaptation these days when other manga's like vinland saga and attack on titan are doing so good. Here is hoping this kind of news might peak some interests from other studio's to finally take on this thing. Before I die, i want to see a proper beserk adaptation of the material we have never covered, thats all i ask for.

I want to see the final product of this project, but the creators must have known that hyping it up would draw publisher ire.
Monetizing it is of course a big problem. From the post, it doesn't look like it's reached a C&D stage yet, but with it being a year out, probably the only way to avoid one is to go silent until it's finished, which they probably wouldn't do. Of course, I'd prefer a quality official adaptation, but Berserk has had it rough in that regard. |

Honestly, stuff like this is what makes me cynical about "fanwork" culture... The... entitlement is just insulting. It's one thing when the fanwork is a passion project or love letter from one person, or a small closeknit ensemble of people, but when it's a whole production with a budget, marketing and big credits list, it's just offputting.

Yeah, finding out that this has some sort of monetization behind it makes me highly skeptical. Like was mentioned above, there is an out if this goes nowhere. At least in this instance, that monetization answers the question of why they were being so open about it, and now I'd wonder why someone would contribute to a project that was almost certainly going to run into this. I understand wishing we had better/more thorough Berserk anime, but it's not like anything we've had rendered the manga unreadable. |
