Something about the wording of the first sentence in the article feels awkward, or maybe superfluous? Those genres are by Black folks, so yes Black culture has influenced them, but it also feels like that doesn't really loop back into the article itself? Maybe it would have been better to highlight how Black American culture has often been intertwined with different parts of pop culture from various Asian cultures?
Interesting to see Meg be mentioned on ANN though. That's pretty cool! She's definitely been killing it with the references. Boa's video was superb, and I wonder how easy it was for her to get the clear on the Boa cosplay lol.

This is more of a JJK tribute with a hint of Naruto than an actual love letter to anime. Just saying.

Yeah from the title of the song and the title of this article was expecting some deep cuts, and not just JJK with a couple Naruto mentions. Where's the equivalent of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien talking about Xenogears?

It's more of her calling out the haters who think she's not a anime fan who is using it to boost her fanbase even thought she has been making anime references in her songs for awhile now. Even her music video BOA has a lot of video game and anime references!

I love Megan, but man do I get second hand embarrassed.
I very rarely include myself in conversations with other anime fans. My friends will talk about anime, ask me if I’ve seen/heard of whatever series, and have to remember that I am the biggest nerd out of all of them. They literally forget constantly because I keep my weebness on the DL.

Could do more to demonstrate that point in a song called "Otaku Hot Girl" than two of the most socially acceptable anime to know about. It'd be like trying to call out the haters about how much of a gamer you are by making a song with a bunch of Call of Duty references.

Can we not do "she's not a real fan because her favs are too mainstream" gatekeeping BS?

That just means she has normie anime taste, like 90% of the people who watch anime / vote on the crunchyroll award. It's not a bad thing. I'm not gonna get mad at her for not name dropping Slow Loop or whatever. And people who play COD are just as much gamers as the people playing Sims 4 or Elden Ring. Same thing here.

"Otaku" has a very specific connotation. How is it gatekeeping to point that out, and to expect something less mainstream in a song where you're proclaiming yourself that? Especially if the intent of the song is to prove how much you love anime, you just give your haters more ammunition by presenting yourself as someone who doesn't know anything other than the Shonen flavor the month.

I'm not going to play dictionary definitions. There's "otaku," as it was originally coined to mean fanatic of any kind of subject, which doesn't have a bar of entry of what kind of anime you need to be a fanatic about. You can be an otaku and stick to the Shonen Jump series, like Megan has going back many years now, insomuch as you are "obsessive" about the show, characters, collecting the merchandise, etc. The lady wore a custom Bruno dress at the CR Awards, she's referred to anime in numerous songs, dresses as characters constantly, etc. She obviously is a big fan and probably spends more money on merch than any of us on this site.
There's also "otaku," as it's used colloquially in the U.S. to refer to "anime fans" at large. The only requirement to be an "otaku" in that sense is to use the term for yourself.
There's no "otaku means you like niche stuff that freaks normies out" requirement.

That's nice, but none of that matters if none of it actually gets translated into the song that is meant to show out and call out the haters. You can buy millions of dollars in merchandise and still write a bad song that makes it look like you've seen a grand total of 2 anime in your life.

It only looks that way if you're completely unfamiliar with the artist, which I imagine most people listening to Megan's music know most of the things I wrote above. I mean, I'm only familiar with her on a cursory basis because of my job, and I know that. I also know no one is expected to flex all of their knowledge into one song to "prove" anything to people who aren't paying attention to her and want to be dismissive anyway.
You were wrong about the otaku definition, and you're switching goalposts now instead of just saying, "Oh, I didn't know that about her; never mind."

The whole song exists to "prove" something to people, even a cursory understanding of the surrounding context would let you know that. I guess that means you need to get a bit more familiar. Or, you know, you could just listen to lyrics like "I'm not finna argue with a Sasuke avi' / Incel mad, I'm a weeb and a baddie / Y'all be my biggest haters / Knowin' if we met, you'd fold like paper", it's not exactly deeply layered.
And no, I was not wrong on the otaku definition. From the dictionary definition to how people use it generally, it absolutely not does refer to a casual watcher of anime. You seem to be greatly overestimating the degree to which it is even in the lexicon over "weeb" or even just "anime fan".

You’re right the lyrics aren’t that deep. That “incel mad” line part in particular speaks a lot right now.
