I’ll admit, I had to look it up on wikipedia:

  • Makoto - male, cross-dresser
  • Saki - female, bisexual, confesses to Makoto
  • Ryuji - male, also interested in Makoto

The more in depth answer is spoiler[ He attends school as a girl to a) avoid harassment and bullying and b) feel out his own identity and decide if things stop at crossdressing or if he is trans with various people in his life pressuring him both ways. Up to where I’d read he seemed to have decided that in spite of his feminine interests being such a major part of his identity, he still wants to identify as a boy.]
