While not as good as the first season, the third season was a lot better than the garbage that was the second season, so mild hype I guess.

Well, it can't get any worse than season 2, right?

Don't say that Glordit, it always can be worse. The budget, animation studio, and love of the series are all factors in ensuring an adaptation will make its source creator and the fans happy.

The good news is that The Rising of the Shield Hero got a fourth anime season. Which means the franchise is healthy and still going strong.

May the Three Heroes continue to receive their karmic punishment.

That's good news, I just hope we don't have to wait 4 more years for it.

I wonder if Kadokawa regrets the way S2 turned out and that S3 was only a partial course correction as an adaptation. I kinda feel for the S3 team. They had to clean up the gaps S2 left and also adapt 3 LNs with only 12 eps at the same time. All this after S2 made a semi-original speedrun adaptation of 4 LNs (lol) with just 12 EPs and then had the balls to finish on a random omake OVA. The Tokyo Ghoul √A to :re problem. You can´t build on sand or tell people that they need to tough out 25 eps and accept that a portion of the adaptation is forever broken regardless of how S4 turns out. Phoning the rest in is the only way forward.

This could have been SAO 2.0 for them. The IP is now cooked in the West, not that I care, but the behind-the-scenes story must be fascinating. Especially as a successful and novel-accurate manga is published all over the world. That is how even the illiterate know that Kinema Citrus flew off the rails after ep 25. There is a picture book to compare the show to. SOA has the opposite problem. A coherent line of anime but little luck with manga. Easily the preferable outcome for the health of an IP.

I really doubt that. If season 4 is good, people will watch. And the die hard fans will watch anyway, even if it is bad. I did for Arifureta.

Rather doubt that. SAO was such a big hit in part because it was a trend-setter on multiple fronts; the only thing even remotely similar to it conceptually which came before it in anime was .hack//SIGN, and that was a very different style of series, and it unquestionably had an influence on all of the game stat-based fantasy titles which followed. Shield Hero, OTOH, debuted in the midst of the big isekai wave, and it did very little that provided a new twist on or addition to its genre. SAO also benefited greatly from focusing on an iconic character who had both the cool factor going for him and was easy for audiences to connect with. Belittle Kirito all you want (and he does deserve some of it), but he's a cool character who's easy to connect with and who any gamer-focused male teen would want to be. Naofumi doesn't fit that description at all, especially not early on.

So yeah, Shield Hero had a big enough following going in to be practically guaranteed of being a success, but it takes special conditions that it couldn't meet to be an SAO-level phenomenon.

On the main topic, am glad to see a confirmation of another season since S3 cut off with a lot of things left hanging.

Guess I'll be the first to say it. After 3 seasons, am not even sure I'll bother with this 4th season. S2 was bad in the 1st half, ok in the 2nd. S3 was just bad and boring. It started off promising, but after the white tiger siblings were saved, the show went down hill. It decided to focus on multiple chars and mini arcs. None besides the tiger siblings did i even care for and don't even get me started on how TACKED ON that girl being raised by a dragon coming out of no where was or how "oh, u'r actually a princess and ur kingdom's ruler wants u dead" coming out of no where was. The worst part of that was, how it imo, ruined Raphtalia. It was bad enough she randomly became a vassel. Now a princess? Am sorry but WHY does EVERYONE in Naofumi's party have to be special? The tiger siblings clearly are too, likely due to whomever their parents are.

I digress. S3 screwed over any good will i had left for the show and while i admit am interested in learning more about the MANY secrets they intro'd in S3 but never answered (Another bad thing u don't do), I just don't believe this series is capable of being good anymore. Its very clear S1 was all it had going for it and then the author just HAD to go nah, screw the waves plot, now u haveta go fight these 4 creatures and other uninteresting stuff. I might be done with Shield Hero. A shame, S1 was great, such wasted potential and that sucks even more becus I like Naofumi's party :(

The Q'ten Lo story arc is a lot more fun than the current Rebuilding Arc. It should make for a more enjoyable season for people who just want to see some action

I guess I'm not surprised after they ended on a ciffhanger like that but while season 3 was an improvement in terms of animation and direction, I hope the writing improves this season.

Seasons 2 and 3 of Shield Hero felt like the rebuilding era of a sports franchise, an era where players still go out and compete, but they only do that to bide their time, to continue to satiate fans and bring in some money, but for the most part, they're just waiting for draft picks and players to mature so that, sooner or later, they can be competitive again.

I want to keep loving Shield Hero, I really do, but it's hard to believe that this franchise has been in rebuilding mode for the past 2 years. Season 4 needs to be an apology for the fans that have stayed with this show since season 1 and those who might be willing to come back, but much of the excitement of this show has already vanished and audiences are moving on to the next big thing. If people approach this show, they will do it with a more cautious, "fool-me-once" mentality. I know I will.

If Star Trek can make a comeback, so can Shield Hero.

Wish this show would stop ignoring its coolest element; the multiversal battle royale of worlds trying to kill each other.

Sorry, but you aren't the first as I said about the same things and for all the same reasons and you are so right! S3 was better than S2 but it still seemed so disjointed that I have no interest in whatever they pull out for S4. I suppose I will watch to see what they do but it will be an easy drop if Major Changes aren't made.
